Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

Slightly tropical citrus and pine hop aroma. Flavor is remarkably rich and hoppy. Tangy tropical hops. Well rounded flavor from start to finish. Must be the lagering. My only complaint is that it is a bit cloying and full bodied for a 5% offering. Tasty but not all that refreshing.

THOUGHTS: Delightful and interesting. A truly innovative beer. Not exactly my cup of tea, but it was great to see a little innovation in style. TECHNICAL: Drank 3/11/2013. Bottle. Poured a clear, very light amber with a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma contained light pale malt and light-colored bread; and heavy resin hops; moderate pine and citrus hops; light passion fruit hops; and slight melon. The initial flavor was slightly sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was lightly sweet and moderately bitter with an average duration. There was pale malt, cracker, white bread, resinous hops, tropical hops, pine hops, citrus hos, passion fruit and slight melon hops. The light to medium body was slightly water with very fizzy carbonation and a metallic finish.

This beer was pretty interesting. You could definitely taste both sides of the IPA and the lager. Personally, I think it would have been better as a straight IPA, but C’est la vie.

Clear gold with a generous bright white head. Grassy hops aromas supported by a solid bready malt base. Herbal and earthy grass hops taste followed quickly by doughy bread, with nice peppery highlights. Light body, lively carbonation, pillowy soft mouthfeel and a crisp clean finish.

Gold pour, big foamy head. Floral, citrusy aroma with sweet malt undertones. Crisp, round flavor- dry simple hoppiness, tasty. Not the best mouthfeel.

Bottle. Enjoy before: 07/13. A clear copper pour with a thick and fluffy antique white head that leaves rings of lacing behind. The subdued aroma features some caramel, a bready maltiness, hints of rye, pine, citrus rinds, and some grapefruits. Thin to medium-bodied. Caramel and some sizable bready qualities start things off taste-wise. Cereal grains and some spiciness in the middle. Zesty rinds and some bitter grapefruits at the end. Kinda stale. Wet cardboard qualities abound. This was much more enjoyable when it was fresh.

Bottle. Pours light orange with white head. Smells fruity. Tastes very fruity with a lagerish finish. It’s a a nice transition beer for lager lovers to ale lovers, and vice versa. Good.

Bottle. Pours a dark gold-orange with a high, fine-grained, cream-colored head. Nose is herbal and floral, but also has a vanilla-like note. A lot of toffee-like sweetness on the open, with hops citrus and some bitterness on the midpalate. More citrus on the close, and a very pleasant smooth, rich mouthfeel. Not a lot of carbonation. Quite nice.

Pours a golden light orange with a one finger white head which leaves nice lecing throughout. Aroma is of citrus, pine, sweet bready malts, and some grassy hops. Taste is citrus (mainly grapefruit) pine, sweet bready malts, caramel, and some grassy notes. Had a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel with a semi dry, moderately bitter, moderate finish. Overall, a tasty mix of a IPA and lager that is a nice surprise from Sam Adams.

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2013 Clear, deep gold with a white head. The malty aroma has some bread and cereal notes. The light body has an oily texture with lively carbonation. It has a mildly bitter taste with a dry finish.
