Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

bottle. clear gold with large fluffy white head. spicy hop aroma with white grapefruit. big, grainy flavor of straw. like a lager with the syrupy sweetness replaced with citrusy lemony hops. lemon lime finish. medium body.

Pours a translucent golden orange amber with a creamy/bubbly off white head that laced. Aroma of a handful of fresh American hops. Piney, floral and citrusy. There is a nice malt character coming through that I get from many Sam Adams beers, however for the most part thise nose is all about the hops! Flavor of resiny hops, sticky pine and floral. Really a great hop flavor profile going on. Clean a crisp with a nice lightly toasted/cereal grain malt profile poking through. Well done Boston Beer Company! Make sure you try this when it’s fresh...that hoppy goodness will diminish quickly.

Wow, did not expect this from Samuel Adams. Thier beers are accetable for the most part, but this is really good. Coppery pour with nice white hewd. Aroma is nice mixture of lemon and hops. Sweet and bitter are fairly well balanced.

12 oz bottle from the Spring Thaw sampler case. Very pleasing with a freshness all about. No bite from hop excess or associated bitterness. A vague creaminess throughout.

Purchased as part of the Samuel Adams 2013 "Spring Thaw" variety twelve pack - This is an interesting, full bodied amber lager, with a citruslike hoppiness and a serious malty body! I like it!

Appearance; clear golden-copper with two fingers of white head and tons of frothy lace. Aroma: grapefruit, pine, marmalade, and honey smacks. Taste: bitter, floral hops dominate up front, with notes of citrus, apricot, and resin; under it all is a no-doubt lager-y malt base, similar to their Boston Lager. Finish: dry, slightly bitter aromatic hops vie for supremacy with slightly sweet, toasty, crackery malts. Notes: This is darn good. Easy drinking, with IPA-like flavors and aromas balanced by high-quality lager malts and finish.

Nice big hop aroma, pours a clear light amber with a thin white head. Nice big hop bite with a very light body. This is a lager for the hophead, bitter hop notes with citrus being predominant. This is a great sessionable beer, and one I’ll be picking up more of.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2013 Shared with Stryzone via Facebook Chat. i read the bottle wrong and thought this was IPA, not IPL. Dave set me straight. It poured a amber gold with a dingy white head and good lacing. Nose is a lot of hops...with flowers, citrus, and some pine. Medium in body and with a very smooth lager mouth feel. Flavor is very rich and shows a ton of west coast hops and the lager smoothness and hops make for a delightful beer. I wonder why more brewers don’t do this. The best of both worlds....lager smoothness and clarity and all the flavor of an IPA.

What a pleasant surprise. I am not a big fan of this brewery’s products, but I thought this was exceptionally good. A real punch of grapefruit on the palate with a very nice mouthfeel, and it goes down dreadfully easy. Nice head with plenty of lacing. Finish is pine, grapefruit and floral. What a great summer drink...hops without the heaviness that good IPAs can leave you with, which can be a little much on a hot day. Hope I can find this on draft somewhere. Well done, Sam!

An IPA Lager hybrid - SAM’s new IPL to me is a smoothed out IPA that tastes similar to their Latitude 48 IPA but with more lager characteristics (crispness, fruit flavors). A nice change of pace, or something to pick up when you don’t know what you want.
