4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Mahogany in colour with a good creamy white head, although a little hazy in the glass. Aromas of mature, sherry steeped fruitcake, hot chocolate and muscatel raisins. Flavours... there’s flavours alright. This is a huge mouthfull of big desserty beer with good filling powdery carbonation. After the huge rush of chocolate torte, there’s a pinch of sweet, plummy juicy fruits on the sides of tongue. There’s so much going on.
This bottle was given to me having arrived across the other side of the world, having sat in an office in a small brewery before, during and for over a year after the February 22nd 2011 Christchurch earthquake. There was suspicion it wouldn’t have lasted, however I suspect it has developed nicely courtesy of a good alcohol content to preserve it. I’d love to try it fresh to assess the difference. But a message to those who have this beer. Give it a decent 6.3 magnitude shake and then leave it in an office and then shake it another 10,000 times at various magnitudes. You’ll have one of the most spectacular beers you’ve ever had.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from bottle
Aroma: Slightly floral but the overpowering scent of sweet malt
Head: Limited 1/3 finger white/tan head that dissipates rather quick
Color: Dark amber. Transparent with difficulty
Taste: Initial strong malt flavor gives way to sweetness. Texture is lightly syrupy
Finish: Sweet aftertaste but nothing overpowering.
Overall Impression: From start to finish the malt is the most observable feature. Interesting beer but was surprised to see this rated as top Lager of 2012.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Mahogany color. It had creamy head. The smell is of spices and caramel. The taste is of toasted grains with a strong alcohol finish. The caramel taste lingers in the mouthfeeel. The mouthfeel is lowered a bit by the high alcohol taste.

pours a dark mahogany from the bottle forming a creamy khaki head. the smell was full of malts and smelt bready and also pick up some dark fruit, maybe plum?? the taste was not what i suspected it was going to be but none the less it was still good. i thought there would be more bitterness. the taste is of a dark fruit once again maybe plum and also has a toasted nut taste. overall a great beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 12-oz. bottle into a pint glass. Color was hazy caramel, almost like iced tea. About a finger of head. Very little lacing on the top. No film on the sides.
Smelled dark fruit, mostly plum and purple grapes. Also some caramel malts.
Tasted pretty similar to the nose. Dark fruits, grapes, plums and lots of malts.
Medium body. Creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Long, consistent finish.
I was expecting a bit more, but it was still a decent beer. It grew on my toward the end.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Appearance - Pours nicely with about two fingers of head (fades quickly but sticks to the glass). When I shine a white LED flashlight through the cup there is a very nice amber/brown hue.
Smell - One word - fruity. The first and foremost smell is prunes and there is most definitely a raisin after tone. Extremely aromatic.
Taste - Very flavorful - I do not taste the alcohol (granted having an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout before may make me not notice this) though I do feel the warming after.
Mouthfeel - Syrupy and thick. Very enjoyable on a cooler summer night. I can’t wait until winter to fully enjoy this beer!
Drinkability - Honestly, quite drinkable. At almost 10%, this is a very potent brew and I can honestly say after two of these I will be feeling quite nice.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark Amber color it has a nutty aroma with a some roasted malts. The taste is smooth with some licorice and some mild spice. I prefer a German dopplebock but this is a pretty good substitute.
