January 28th, 2012 - Boston Beer Companys’ Double Bock is a belgian dubbel disguised as a doppel bock. The aroma reminds me much more of the latter style, heavy with grape and cola notes on the nose, and a cloying sweetness that I’d expect from a semi-mass marketed dark beer (and especially one bundled in with other winter warmers.) And while the flavor shares this same clumsy malt-based sugariness, it also shares acute yeast notes, umami and a flavor that makes me think they brewed this beer with a couple rinds of parmesan cheese floating in the wort. Whatever the manufacturing process, the flavor is a bit of a surprise, and while it’s not match for a right and proper dubbel, it does make this one of the more desirable beers out of the Winter seasonal box.

Poured from a bottle it looks like a cream sherry with a disappearing head. The aroma is of malt and the taste is on the sweet side paired with a slight bitterness

From a 12 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a cloudy brown with a feint off white head. Aroma of caramel. Flavors of caramel, raisins and toffee. Medium bodied. Smooth, sweet finish.

Tap at GABF 2013. Poured a crystal clear dark amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is weak malt. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a malty resin liqourice palate and a long bitter finish.

A little stabby with the sweetness on certain parts of the tongue but pretty smooth none the less. Tart dark fruits, grapes and raisins. Lots of hearty earthy baked breads. Medium bodied with flavors all over the place, a bit of carbonation to break things up. Finishes balanced and dry with a touch of hop and faint lingering sweetness to balance. Not a lot of noticable alcohol. A pretty good beer, gets messy at parts but finishes clean. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Well, I like Sam Adams, and I like bocks, so this was the perfect storm. Paired very well with a seafood casserole. Not much head but good lacing, a tad hoppy but not over the top. Good beer.

Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin white head, with good lacing. Aroma is malt forward, as expected - raisins and brown sugar. Flavor is robust malts and raisin, with a somewhat sticky feel. Alcohol definitely present. No hop character at all, as far as I can tell. Overall, potent and satisfying. Exceptional version of the style.

Rich malty dark and dense. Heavy beer that is good for those cold winter nights. Delicious. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
