3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
AIBA 2003: Quite a strong pressence of caramelly malts in the nose, with some mollasses, quite sweet and sticky, with a warming alcohol finish, a bit thick, fat, and sticky. Doesn't compete with the better german examples, but what the hey. Not bad. A bit one dimensional if anything.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
At AIBA 2003. Sweet caramel aroma & darkly inviting appearance. Flavour is quite malty but has some of the soy sauce qualities attributed to their triple bock. Alcohol is somewhat evident. Very thick on the tongue.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This is a big lager. Low carb, almost no head. Flavor is toasty and slightly bitter with discernable alcohol flavor. Suprisingly mild finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 5, 2003 Deep ruby body, quickly diminishing tan head. Aroma of caramel. Taste is sweet and alcoholic, but the alcohol is fairly well hidden for an 8.45%. A somewhat fruity note, which leaves it a shade less than Salvator. Still, the best Sammy I have had yet and good beer overall.

Mmmm...a good winter warmer. A little bit strong on the alcohol taste, but it goes down warm and sweet. Not true to a traditional Doppel, but it's easy to find and easy to drink.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark copper with a moderate light tan head that diminishes to a thin lid. Strong sorgum/treacle aroma with a slight undertone of roasted nuts. Sweet roasted malt begining with a sweet and alcohol finish. Sticks to the mouth. Very pleasant late malt linger, but the alcohol hangs on a bit to long and strong.

This is a nice doppelbock. Very malty as it should be and reasonably priced.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear, dark ruby red color with a small, fizzy head that does not linger. The aroma is strongly malty with hints of toffee and caramel. Medium body with low carbonation, the flavor is very sweet and malty upfront with a long, sweet finish. It has lots of caramel, brown sugar, and molasses notes that make this a very sweet beer. A good effort by Sam Adams, and one of their better beers. But it is not quite as good as many of the German doppelbocks. This one is a little too sweet with a weird fruitiness, probably from the yeast.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20
Weak aroma - can detect malts and hops but nothing powerful. Small off-white foamy lacing head. Deep red-brown but looks kind of fake. Heavy watery body and medium carb. Good body. Sweet. More of a artificial brown sugar sweetness than malts. Good level of hops giving a sweet nutty finish. Can taste alcohol. A few off flavors - corn syrup? Really too sweet for the low level of complexity.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Although most likely my favorite style, the effectiveness of this one as an example of the style is hindered by one major factor: the Sam-Adamsness. That fruity finish on the palate is rather annoying. Otherwise, this is an entirely adequate drink. I just wish it weren't weighed down, to the extent that it is, by the characteristic fruitiness of Sam Adams products. Think about it: fruit character in a doppelbock of all styles? Just don't seem right . . .
Still, being a doppel, it has plenty going for it, hence the relatively strong rating.
