Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

Tasted 10/24/07. 12oz bottle. SAMPLE B. Dark brown with a ruby tint. Lacing off-white head. Yeasty floral peppery nose. Notes of toffee and bananas. Light to medium bodied with a smokey roasted flavor. Wheaty yet off-putting. Odd sulphorous note. Smokey bready flavor. Tingling and mildly dry. Didn’t care for this one too much.

"Sample B" provided by a rep for Sam Adams. Dark brown beer with a thick tan head. Lots of lacing. Banana bread aroma and flavor with some roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Lively carbonation. Nice

Perhaps the darkest weizen I have seen. Aroma is big and malty with some spice. Aroma is better than the flavor which was not substantial. Body was thin as well.

Sampled @ the brewery with the Mad_Indian. Part of a contest to see what beer is going to be bottled in January, the contest was the Dunkle versus the Irish red, both were pretty good, however the dunkle was better. Poured brownish with a small head. Aroma of banana spices, and caramel. the flavor is sweet, spices, banana, and caramel. I voted for this brew however i thought the two beers we had at the end of the tour, the weissbier and the Weizen were much better, figures.

Sampled with Stegosaurus during our second Boston Tour. Served at Sam Adams. Brown pour with mild head. Good caramel and roast aroma. Finished smooth. I voted for this over the Red.

Tap @ the brewery. This was an offbeat but wonderful dunkelweizen. Pours that wonderful deep cloudy brown color we all know so well with a smallish (for the style) brown head. Aroma is clove, banana, and a hint of black licorice. Taste is the same, with the licorice really coming out in the aftertaste. A great beer from Sam Adams.

330ml bottle from NZ Beer Awards. Very dark brown almost blacj but you can see thru the glass. Really nice head, holds firm then thins but still covers the surface. A touch spicey on the nose with roast malt flavours wafting through. I’ve stiored this a few months so it’s perhaps past it’s best. A touch oxidised but still the flavours come through. Nice dark malt profile. Wheat not perhaps as dominant - perhaps filtered? Reasonable, but wish I’d got got it fresh

Aroma is roasty chocolate. Brown in color. Flavor is sweet, roast,y and wheaty with a little bit of clove and yeast perhaps. It has a lingering sweetness as well. It is definitley better than the Irish Red which it is competing against.

I was able to try a few samples of this Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen at the Boston Beer Company Brewery in Jamaca Plain section of Boston. This beer is in a promotional contest finals vs Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale. Both started off in a home brewing contest and the winner will be mass brew-duced in their Brewmaster collection. I was a little disappointed in this. When paired with the other beer i thought i was going to like this beer better just because it was darker. Almost a stout color. But the flavor did not live up to the color. Fresh tasting, but the spiceness didn’t impress me. I’m sure others will like this more than me, but i think i different combination or amounts of the spices and flavors they used would make this better.
