Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

A: The beer pours a hazy brown color with a finger of off-white head. S: Strong banana aromas as well as toasted malts and bread. A nice bit of toffee as well as some subtle clove aromas. There is a bit of wheat character to it as well as some yeast. T: Less banana than on the nose, but still enough to taste it. Quite a bit more reliant on the toasted malt and bread flavors. A nice bit of toffee and caramel with only a mild clove flavor. Maybe even a hint of vanilla. M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. O: A lot of the seasonal Sam Adams beers arenít very good, but this was quite the opposite.

This is one of those beers you open and arenít sure if it is even going to be drinkable. But a two year old dunkelweizen in this case is not only drinkable itís enjoyable. Light brown. Thin head. Molasses nose with nuttiness. Rich and chewy almost like a bock. Sweet, malty with good toffee notes, light nuts. The body still has some vibrancy. Iím not sure what this was like when fresh, but I do like where itís at now.

from Mondial de la BiŤre, Strasbourg - pours a dark orange-brown colour with a little beige foam; moderate aroma of banana and corn; poor malt backbone and a pretty harsh palate, a hint of acidity and a short quite dry aftertaste of banana and wheat - very poor

12 ounce bottle opened 9/3/10. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. The aroma is yeasty with banana and spice notes. The taste is bready, with banana, spice and a tart, bitter finish. Medium bodied. Fairly straightforward example.

sample bottle from aplusbreaks. Brown pour with a medium tan head. A very malty nose with hints of caramel and some yeast. The nose has held up well considering the age of the bottle. The flavor is really pretty good. I would imagine this was very good when fresh. Very malty and some fruit notes with some faint spices. Nice.
