COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

Sampled on 12/31/2010. This dunkelweizen pours a medium to light brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention and lacing. The aroma is bready, caramel, fruity and sweet. A medium to light bodied dunkel. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy. Decent carbonation. Nice breadiness, but a little lacking in sweetness. Decent and drinkable, yet seems to be missing something. Could use a little more sweetness and a touch more breadiness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

2007 "Sample B" bottle shared by Daknole. Pours cloudy brown with scant tan head. Rich malty aroma with lots of raisins, dates, other dark dried fruit, molasses, and the crust of rum cake. Medium carbonation, good palate. Fruit cakey malts balanced by a nice dryness. Like an old actress can still perceive its heyday shine, which impresses. Clean finish is a little thin but the beer has stood the test of time exceptionally well.

Bottle. Hazy ruby tinged brown pour with a short, sticky and foamy white head. Aroma is chocolate covered banana, bubblegum, candy, wheat and light spice. Taste is big grains, sweet malt, candy notes, banana, spice, yeast and cocoa. Body is medium with a bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more grains, chocolate banana, light spice, yeast, sweet malt and candy.

Sampled from 12-oz bottle via Fall Brewmasters Collection 12-pack. Pours a semi-clear brownish amber colored brew with a thick and creamy off-white head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, floral hops and a hint of citrus. Taste is light to medium bodied, flavors of caramel malt, some light yeast, and floral hops. Finish is light, crisp, some malt and yeast aftertaste that quickly disappears. One of the lighter dunkelweizens I’ve tried but still a solid beer.

Cloudy medium copper body with a light khaki and yellowish head. The head is dense and long lasting. Light banana esters in the nose along with some pleasant floral hints. There is also some peanut butter in the overall sweet smelling beer. The taste is initially bread crusts with some banana peels coming through later in the drink. There is also some woody tobacco that throws off the finish. The banana peels add up as you drink and it gets cloying. Too bad the taste doesn’t quite measure up the pleasing smell.

I liked this more than I expected. Reddish brown, decent sized loose, spongey head. I got some rye, some banana, some toasty aromas, and the flaor was more rye. Nice and clean, no "off" flavors to speak of. Tasty. Sampled at lithy’s Septemberfest.

Bottle. Pours a slightyl hazy light brown body with a small fizzy off white head that faded to a thin film. The nose is pretty decent, slightly husky and earthy with some light esters of banana. The flavor is a bit thin though, not enough yeastiness or body. The finish is laced with banana and clove. Light to medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. This one isn’t the best.

Easy drinking dark amber in color brew. Light malts with some nice Dunkel characters. I can drink this all day.

FROTHINGSLOSH (4843) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 30, 2011
Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s this beer poured a caramel-brown color with a large foamy cream colored head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was light banana, clove, a touch of citrus and moderate bread. The aroma was bitter and bready with notes of caramel, clove, a touch of banana, tart citrus and nut. The finish was long, tart, bread, caramel, citrus and clove. Fairly full bodied. Nice.

Perhaps the darkest weizen I have seen. Aroma is big and malty with some spice. Aroma is better than the flavor which was not substantial. Body was thin as well.
