Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan pancake head turns creamy as it recedes leaving spider lacing. Sweet ginger and pumpkin aromas. Creamy with sweet dark caramel and pumpkin upfront turning to pie spices in the lasting earthy finish.

On tap at the Lucky Monk brewpub, pours a dark brown with a thin head, the aroma was of spices and malt, spices pretty much overtook this one for me, the flavor was way too spiced on the front end and wasn’t balanced enough in the finish with the sweetness of caramel or malt, not for me.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The pumpkin and spices are on the mild side, but the end result is a good tasting beer. Notes of caramel, toffee, raisin and light smoke on top of the mild pumpkin pie flavor. Smooth 8.5%. Very natural tasting. I’d like it better if the pumpkin and spices were a little bit stronger. The smoked malt was a nice surprise.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark reddish brown. Aroma is pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg- spicy. Taste is more spice heavy, less pumpkin- some caramel, hint of smoky- like a slight fig or raisin. Smooth, boozy finish, a good pumpkin- their regular pumpkin may be better though.

Samuel Adams what have you done? Pumpkin beer that has no pumpkin taste to it? Very bitter with no rhyme or reason to all the different flavors. I was so confused and it just tasted like a mashup that just does not work. The 8.5% is not hidden well and is very heavy. Half a glass and rest of bottle, went down the drain.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Moderate aroma of pumpkin and allspice, the former dominant. Clear rust, thick yellow head, decent lacing. Full body. Spicier flavor, still allspice, and pumpkin still evident. Slightly boozy, but it works with the spice. Good when sampled cold and not as good when warm. Could work as a winter warmer. I know that sounds like it doesn’t make sense but to me it does. Probably a good late season pumpkin ale. A bit better balance than the other high gravity pumpkin ales available. Well done. Boston Beer proves repeatedly that they are capable of making quality craft beers on a large scale, at a decent price.

1.8 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
This beer smelled horrible, with an acrid musty smell. It poured a dark copper color with a nice head that quickly dissipated. The taste was a little better, but not by much. It has a sweet, cinnamon flavor with a weak taste of pumpkin. This is probably the worst Sam Adams beer I’ve ever had, and I will never try it again.

Big bottle in a shaker. Pours brown/copper with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of pumpkin, some caramel and pale malts, and light hops. Average texture. Not the best pumpkin beer.
