This dark unfiltered brew is medium-bodied with a deep roasted malt aroma. The molasses and licorice in this brew are authentic to American porters of the colonial era, as is the more assertive hop finish.

12 oz bottle. Best before October 2006. Chestnut brown. Billowing head of tan foam that holds forever. Huge toasted malts..thick, dripping molasses aroma..heavy licorice..damn.. Herbal, almost medicinal licorice & molasses character that leaves the hops underwhelming. Burnt malts carry the flavors pretty well..certainly an interesting porter flavor. Medium bodied..syrupy, chewy texture. Certainly the best of the Brewer Patriot Collection for me. That might not be saying much, but this by itself is not bad at all.

"this was another solid effort from the Sam Adams historic line of beers that i apparently just liked more than everyone else. stands out from other porters because of the licorice and molasses...iíll buy if they make it again."

BBE Oct 06. Opaque dark brown beer. Crisp palate. Lots of bitter toffee and molasses and unsweet licorice. Finishes crisp with some carbonated bite and more unsweet licorice. Another unusual beer in the Patriot collection. Very drinkable and rich.

bottle from stfun on 1/16/11 with a bb date of october 2006. not really sure why this was laying around and even less sure of why i wanted it in the first place! porter colored with a soft beige head. typical. odd aroma... vanilla, roast, lactose, molasses, raisins, vegetals (green peppers), sweaty yeast and card board. the flavor is the same only turned down a notch. there are also notes of dates, wood, herbaceous-ness and BTF iodophor. it is creamy and slick yet sharp. clearly it is past itís prime... sadly, it is still better than a lot of fresh stuff on the market! 6/3/5/3/15

Bottle thanks to daknole, October 2006. Dark brown with hints of red, a thin tan head. Tons of molasses and anise aroma. Taste is roasty then a big lasting molasses bitter finish, a hint of iodine and anise. Really a great beer.

Totally an oxidized rancid mess. Unfar to rate this...So I will give it a middle of the road rating.

An interesting version of a porter from an earlier time period. Not really a fan of licorice , but everything was pretty good. Very roasted with a decent hop finish.

Dark roasty grainy chalky bitter chocolate taste jumps out at you. Some molasses in the nose. Cool idea for this series of brews.

Since an A$$hole who will remain nameless sent me a few messages about how lame my rating are and that I donít seem to be rating the beers as he thinks I should I am going to try this in a way to make him happy. Aroma : had a Toasted toffee maltiness that appealed to ME. Appearance: I like how it looked. (Ops no verbs there). Good rich brown color with a full tan head. Palate Full body, Creamy texture, soft Carbonation with a long finish. Overall impression most excellent I may not be right on the same rate at others, but I thought to put what I think and feel about the beer was more important than just going along with everyone else. Because after all I donít think youíll run out and get this just because I rated it.

This motor-oil black porter pours a thick darkness into the glass with a tiny head. Aroma is somewhat bready with dark chocolate and some toasted chicory. Tastes dry dark malt with coffee, licorice, and some hops in the finish. Very earthy porter with an almost dirtlike dryness. Nice to try, but I won’t seek it out.

Fairly dark, with a good flavor until the licorice take over, though that’s just a personal view. For staying in the traditional style, Sam did a top notch job. I wasn’t too fond on it though.
