Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks aren’t meant to be broken. Yet, to the monk’s dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Amber with a white head. Nose is musk, spice, yeast, and dried fruits. Easy palate, sticky sweetness, dried fruits, spice, heavy yeast overtone.

12 oz bottle served in a Unibroue snifter. Pours a clear, deep amber color with visible carbonation and a decent bone-colored head. The aroma is not particularly promising. It’s malty and fruity but does not seem to have the hop load of an IPA. ... but then, neither does a Belgian "Belgian IPA". The flavor is richer and better. There is a significant hop component in the taste (and a touch of Belgian ’funk’), but still not at the level expected for an IPA. The Belgian element of spicy yeast is nicely done. Smooth; medium-full body; nice bit of dryness towards the finish; excellent level of carbonation. O: a fine Belgian style beer, albeit less hoppy than one might expect given the IPA labelling. More of a Belgian PA.

Draft at sb. Pours a clear dark amber with a loose tan head and light lace. Mild pine and tangerine nose, caramel showing as well. Creamy medium body with moderate carb. Toast, pine, caramel, and tangerine mid palate with a dry pine resin finish. Not bad.

Bottle. Enjoy before: 09/12. An amber pour with a smallish beige head. The subtly sweet aroma is dominated by candi sugar, a little caramel, lightly zesty citrus fruits & rinds, touches of grapefruits, a musty herbaceousness, and hints of cloves & nutmeg. Goes down relatively thin to medium-bodied. Mildly sweet upfront taste-wise with some caramel and candi sugar. A slightly bitter finish with some citrus rinds and grapefruit. An ample musty/funky yeastiness along with a dusting of cloves and nutmeg throughout. Not bad, just a standard version of a style everyone seems to be doing these days.

Orange with tiny head. Clear. Apricot and earthy aroma. Slightly bitter taste, somewhat floral, not very hoppy. Not a bad beer but wouldn’t seek it out again

From notes: Poured hazy orangey-amber with a 1-finger off-white head. Aroma is mild, but complex, with notes of pine, spice and a touch of earthy yeast. Body was slightly fuller than medium. Pine and grapefruit hops flavors, with some clove and yeast that linger in the finish.

THOUGHTS: Very nice beer. I’m a sucker for a well-made Belgo-American beer. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a sparkling, medium orange with beautiful carbonation and an average, creamy, off-white head that mostly lasted and nearly fully lasted leaving excellent lacing. The aroma could have been stronger and contained moderate caramel; light to moderate pine, resin and citrus hops; and light to moderate earthy, spicy and funky yeast. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderate to heavily bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel, citrus hops, pine hops, burnt caramel, spicy yeast, slight funk, slight roasted malts, mango and peach. The light to medium body was slightly creamy and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a dry finish.

Bottle, pours a clear honey amber. Not to hoppy, citrus hops with an off bitter after taste. Not one of my favorites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Sam’s, Durham, from the SA hop box. Pale straw gold pour with a light, crisp carbonation and even some decent lacing. Nose of modest spice and fairly ripe yeast, blended well with a bright, dry hop strain. Dry palate and prickly mouthfeel complemented the flavors well, and these were anything but overly sweet, thankfully. Faintly malty, but so dry that I’d put it halfway to a singel. Not bad at all.
