Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks arenít meant to be broken. Yet, to the monkís dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor thatís balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

From notes: Poured hazy orangey-amber with a 1-finger off-white head. Aroma is mild, but complex, with notes of pine, spice and a touch of earthy yeast. Body was slightly fuller than medium. Pine and grapefruit hops flavors, with some clove and yeast that linger in the finish.

THOUGHTS: Very nice beer. Iím a sucker for a well-made Belgo-American beer. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a sparkling, medium orange with beautiful carbonation and an average, creamy, off-white head that mostly lasted and nearly fully lasted leaving excellent lacing. The aroma could have been stronger and contained moderate caramel; light to moderate pine, resin and citrus hops; and light to moderate earthy, spicy and funky yeast. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderate to heavily bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel, citrus hops, pine hops, burnt caramel, spicy yeast, slight funk, slight roasted malts, mango and peach. The light to medium body was slightly creamy and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a dry finish.

Bottle, pours a clear honey amber. Not to hoppy, citrus hops with an off bitter after taste. Not one of my favorites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Samís, Durham, from the SA hop box. Pale straw gold pour with a light, crisp carbonation and even some decent lacing. Nose of modest spice and fairly ripe yeast, blended well with a bright, dry hop strain. Dry palate and prickly mouthfeel complemented the flavors well, and these were anything but overly sweet, thankfully. Faintly malty, but so dry that Iíd put it halfway to a singel. Not bad at all.

This brew is a clear orange-amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of hops and yeast plus a touch of malt. Light to medium body with flavors of citrusy hops, sweet spices and yeast. Some malt in the background. The finish is mildly spicy yeast with a subtle hops aftertaste. Decent overall.
