Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks aren’t meant to be broken. Yet, to the monk’s dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Golden with a lasting clumpy canopy. Smells of dusty hops, a bit rustic. Medium full nectar with good carbonation. Very vibrant hop profile with a modest malt backbone creating a strict hop character that finishes heavily bittered. Not much of anything else. Pleasing to drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a golden amber. Cloves, pepper, banana, and spice aroma. Cloves are predominant flavor, but features earthy and spicy hops. Clove flavor lingers. Would have liked more hop aroma in an Belgian style IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not a whole lot of hoppiness with this beer. The malt overpowered this "IPA" but it still provided for an enjoyable taste.

Draft poured a relatively clear dark amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma was some light citrus malts, some yeast character, a touch of pine in here. Aroma was some caramel, and some pine resin. Okay brew.

I was confused when I ordered a sample of it on what it was. Even more confused that they call it an IPA.

Pours orangy gold, with light fizzy head that leaves quickly. Nose is peppery, floral, slight citrus, banana esters. A nice Belgian efforvesence. This is dry as a bone! Bitter from the start but not overpowering. Finishes peppery and dry. Just a slight sweetness in the middle. notes of grass, roasted malt, pine. A decent offering from Samuel Adams.

On tap at Uncle Mike’s. Amber with a large white crown. Aroma of Belgian yeast, skunked grains, mild citrus and spices. Taste is more Belgian than IPA with mild citrus, bready malt, clove and other assorted spices. I see why the monk is grumpy.

Amber with a white head. Nose is musk, spice, yeast, and dried fruits. Easy palate, sticky sweetness, dried fruits, spice, heavy yeast overtone.

12 oz bottle served in a Unibroue snifter. Pours a clear, deep amber color with visible carbonation and a decent bone-colored head. The aroma is not particularly promising. It’s malty and fruity but does not seem to have the hop load of an IPA. ... but then, neither does a Belgian "Belgian IPA". The flavor is richer and better. There is a significant hop component in the taste (and a touch of Belgian ’funk’), but still not at the level expected for an IPA. The Belgian element of spicy yeast is nicely done. Smooth; medium-full body; nice bit of dryness towards the finish; excellent level of carbonation. O: a fine Belgian style beer, albeit less hoppy than one might expect given the IPA labelling. More of a Belgian PA.
