COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks aren’t meant to be broken. Yet, to the monk’s dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Enjoyed it. On tap at a local beer fest. Slightly strange in that it had some of the sweet bubblegum/bannana flavors from a belgian ale but the hops added the piney bitterness on top. Not my favorite Sam Adams creation but one that is interesting enough to enjoy.

Bottle thanks DalzAle (Greg)! Pours clear bright amber with a tight soapy white head that slowly fades to a sudsy film and lacing. Aroma is bright citrus orange peel and pine with yeast and malt all around. Taste is bitter orange peel and bread like yeast with malt mixed in well. Palate is slick chalky and finishes dry. Very nice!

Nice aroma with hints of caramel, light fruit, and a touch of pine hops. Pours a clear orange-amber, with a full white head. This is a very well done beer, with a sweet beginning, the spiciness of a good Belgian beer, and a nice crisp hop finish. This beer does have a fuller mouthfeel that I was expecting, especially with the low(er) ABV. Hopefully this beer will start being distributed outside of the 12 pack.

Pours clear medium copper with a chunky, craggy off white head. Scent is banana and cloves. Taste is the same, plus more spicing...malt. Rich, mildly bitter hops. Creamy and velvety. A very nice blend.

Tap at Foley’s Sam Adams tap takeover. Pours orange with fruity hoppy nose. Tastes of yeast, banana, vanilla, and little plastic. finishes with a bitter hop presence. i thought it was refreshing.

Clear medium amber pour with long lasting moderate off-white head. Fair amount of visible carbonation. Aroma is of somewhat muted Belgian yeast and some piney hop notes. Taste reveals a bit more of the Beglian traits - banana, clove and other spices mixed with some lightly bitter hoppiness. Not a great IPA or a great Belgian, but a fairly decent blend of the styles. I probably enjoy New Belgium’s Belgo a bit more as it focuses more on the Belgian aspects, but this one is still enjoyable.

12 Oz bottle. Pours clear amber with thin off white head. Hints of pine, citrus, vanilla, orange, in the nose and they seemed to open up as you drink, but start off a bit weak. Soft, velvety mouth feel that’s thicker than it looks. Initially tastes very much like a Belgian Trippel (like the La Fin du Monde), lots of fruity, vanilla, crisp, sweet refreshment but follows shortly after with bitter pine hops on the back of the tongue that finishes like a traditional IPA. Very neat fusion of flavors with a complimenting transition. Though, I prefer the Dark Depths porter/IPA fusion.
