Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks arenít meant to be broken. Yet, to the monkís dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor thatís balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

I can venture to say that this may be my favorite Sam Adams to date. Sweet thick beer with a nice amount of hop flavor as well as a nice belgian strand of yeast. Pours cloudy yelllow with a nice froathy head. I would buy a case of this if available.

Decent beer, I can taste the belgian yeast, hence the name, some nice hops in there as well, a bit of a bitter/dry finish that is barely noticeable. Not a bad beer, very drinkable, just not enough to jump out as one of the great ones for me. If it was on tap at a bar I would go for it but probably wonít seek it out to buy again.

Poured a light, murky yellow on tap with good head but little lacing. Aroma was of the belgian yeast and wheat. Taste was pretty much straight belgian: citrusy, fruity, funky, but with a little bitter hop finish. Not bad, but not disappointed I won?t be able to find it again.

12 oz bottle, part of the "Hopology" 12 pack. Pours a clear red orange with a good sized white head. Aroma is candied fruits, hops and light yeast. Flavor is sweet, yet enough Belgian notes to be interesting. Full palate and quite carbonated. An easy drinker, but a little sweet to be sessionable.

Candied, slightly doggy, lightly tannic and chemical Belgian PA aroma. Clear, intense dark orange with a thinnish almost white head. Better than it smells... Hoppy, tannic, lightly briny, dry, a little cypress. Moderately astringent, medium finish. Tastes like an amber. Belgian yeast gets lost in the hopping. ABC Liquors, Kerry Forest.

Draft @ redlight redlight. Floral piney aromas. Pours dark gold with a dense white head. Piney resin very bitter upfront with sweet malts following and finishing dry with some hints of spice

Draft sample. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate spice hop and yeast aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy spice bittersweet finish of medium duration. Very good brew.

The beer pours a golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma has some nice orange citrus notes, as well as a lot of flowers and a strong dose of Belgian yeast. The flavor is very similar. There is a ton of biscuit malt and Belgian yeast, as well as some floral and orange citrus notes. There is also a hint of pine and a little bit of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation

Smells yeasty like a Belgian ale and citrusy where that style intersects an IPA aroma. Itís glowing orange and all kinds of lively. The taste is very bitter and earthy and chewy as though bret yeast was used. Very astringent and would be hard to drink in quantity. Iíve always said most Belgian ales arenít hoppy o dense enough. Here is the counterpoint.

Nice golden pour from tap with a fluffy inch of head. Hempy aroma translates to a hemp and hop flavor with slight citrus. ElGaucho, an IPA fan, is enjoying it quite a bit next to me.
