COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks aren’t meant to be broken. Yet, to the monk’s dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Bottle from a multipack from Nugget Market in Davis, CA. Pours clear copper with a slight creamy off-white head. Aroma is spicy/earthy. Med body with creamy carb. There’s Belgian ester (banana) with lots of citrus and resin. Every quaff is a repeat taste sensation. Finishes very Belgian, and more bitter than many of those. Really nice beer.

Draft sample. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate spice hop and yeast aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy spice bittersweet finish of medium duration. Very good brew.

Amber in color with a rocky white head. Strong Belgian influence on this one with lots of clove and spice notes. A bit yeasty with some floral and fruity hops, particularly citrus peel. Some banana, too. The flavor is more bitter than expected, but still fairly bready. Citrus peel, pine, and floral notes give a nice hoppy character. Spice and yeast are evident, as is some malt sweetness.

Bottle from sonnycheeba. Pours clear copper with a large, frothy off-white head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is grassy, herbal, spicy, and minty hops with light citrus notes, honey and pale malt with peach and apricot fruity esters, and an earthy Belgian yeast nose. Flavor is moderate hops and bitterness with supporting dry malt, medium fermentation fruity esters, and a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation with light alcohol warmth, and no creaminess or astringency.

Bottle poured a clear golden amber with a small lasting ivory head. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon, straw, yeast and light pine. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of yeast, straw, pear, apple, light grapefruit and a hint of pine with a crisp dry moderatly bitter, lingering yeasty finish.

Bright orange/gold pour, white head. Straight up citrus hops, resin and very little malt that I detected. Hoppier than almost any sam beer I have had.
