Grumpy Monk is a Belgian IPA. The long held brewing traditions of Belgian monks arenít meant to be broken. Yet, to the monkís dismay, the distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor thatís balanced by a roasted malt sweetness for a complex and playful brew.

Pours dark gold, with a medium white head. Aroma is all Belgian yeast, and maybe a hint of hops underneath. Flavor is sweet malt and citrus hops, withalong sweet/bitter finish. Palate is ok, fine carbonation but a bit too much. Decent, but not all that special.

Pours a clear golden yellow w/fizzy head. Aromas of fruity hops and citrus. Smooth hoppy taste with citrus and pine tail.

May 3rd, 2014 - The joke here is what makes the Monk Grumpy is the empty steiner, but I doubly appreciate the artistís rendering of the monk, his chin mirroring the brotherís paunch, and a scathing eye looking for something to denounce or complain about. Like the sub-reddit of "Monks pointing at things", this puts me in the mood for a yeasty, tasty and semi-sweet beer. And this Grumpy Monk delivers, in some aspect. The nose is very sweet, with peach and pear juice, and even lemonade, to the extent that the aroma smells like a Belgian ale mixed with a shandy - a monstrosity no doubt concocted at a golf course somewhere on a hot day. The flavor is sweet, too, though not as much as the aroma. And like many beers from Sam Adams, I feel that the carbonation is too aggressive and pushy. It has some malt character and a bit of a hop twang, whereas the yeast ropes in peach and strawberry. But all these flavors feel very out of alignment, the balance very askew and mashed together.

Smells of Belgian yeast with an IPA twist. The taste is more IPA than Belgian but it is a good mix. This deserves a fair rating. Not all macrobrews are horrible. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear light Amber color with beige head. Mild banana, yeast and citrus peel. Bitter but has the unusual yeast that IMO, distracts rather than compliments the hops. Not a fan of this mixture of two styles that I enjoy on their own.

Bottle. Amber with a cream colored head and lacing. Aroma spices, fruitiness and malts. The taste also had some pine in it. A very tasty Belgian ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of May 2016. The pour is amber-orange with a modest but lingering off-white head. Lovely aroma of Belgian yeast, Belgian toast, clove, and pepper. Light to almost medium body. Smooth. Decent sweet pale malt taste with a bite of clove and pepper while still being balanced. Easy drinkability.

More Belgian than IPA by a lot. Low aroma and straightforward taste/palate. But really drinkable and of in the mood for Belgian but traditionally an IPA drinker it's a good go-to. Like a better Leffe. Bottle in variety pack in SoCal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A nice yeasty IPA with lots of classic piney hoppiness, fruity esters, and a solid malt backbone. Very good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Soft banana spice aroma. Clear amber body capped with a two fingered white head. The bitter bite a balanced with smooth malt. As advertised itís alike a cross between and IPA and Belgian ale.

a brew that starts out beery with some toffee and malt and then features the Belgian spice line and banana flavors. i like that approach. the palate is smooth and vibrant. like a golden with a bit of caramel. the beer doesnt have to hit you over the head. good malt aroma. i didnt get the overwhelming hop character.
