3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled on 8/17/2012. This brown ale pours a medium brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, sweet and nutty. A medium to full bodied brown ale. The malts are caramel, bready, nutty and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. A nice malty and nutty brown ale, with a nice nutty character. Much better than I was expecting. Perhaps a touch sweet. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is somewhat sweet

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Clear, cola/burgundy color with a modest off-white head and ok lace. Clear aromas of hazelnuts, toffee and caramel, perhaps some floral hops and chocolate as well. Caramel sweetness up front with plenty of nuttiness and chocolate. More of a hops kick than expected. Medium body, lively carbonation, smooth texture and the sweetness kicks out the hops in the finish.

A great beer. Really tastes like chocolate and hazelnut in a good way. A great dessert beer.

Bottle part of the newly released Harvest Collection 12-pack. Pure hazelnut aroma with a hint of sweetness. Really strong nut. Clear dark brown with a thin tan head. Nice, hazelnut flavor with nice blend of sweetness from roasted malts. Not my favorite style but a really solid malty beer. Hazelnut aspect sets it apart from humdrum, malty beers of similar strength.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2013 Went into this only having a vague idea what hazel nut was and expecting something like Newcastle Brown Ale. Was pleasantly surprised to find it had a background taste that vaguely resembled an old discontinued favorite of mine- Wild Goose Nut Brown. In the foreground is what I can only assume to be hazel nut. ;) Notes of sweet coffee, chocolate, nuttiness, butter, and caramel malts, with perhaps a mild toasty finish. Unique pleasant hazel smell. Substantial and not watery, but refreshing- good choice for fall. Would be a little too sweet as an every day year round beer (generally I prefer a dryer beer), but good as a twofer in a seasonal mix pack (Which is how its available). Was disappointed when I learned that the Rauchbier was out of the fall mix pack the first year this got in, but they found a decent replacement. Maybe they?ll rotate them every few years. :) Hazel Brown, Octoberfest, and Harvest Pumpkin Ale all in the sane mix pack tilts a little sweet, but all are good beers, and the Latitude 48 in the 2013 edition helps balance it some. This is a revised review a year or two after the beer hit the shelves, so if I confuse tenses, that’s why. One thing I find repeating it 2-3 years in a row is that it goes from "Wow, cool, something flavorful and different" to something closer to "I can deal with this.". Maybe its the sort of thing that you take out for a few years and bring back to keep it from getting stale. Also, bring back Rauchbier. ;)

Bottle; poured a very dark caramel/orange color with a khaki head. Aroma was quite nice. Caramel, nuts and cocoa. Flavor was also very enjoyable. Layers of nuts, caramel and cocoa. Touch of sweetness. Flavor lingers for a bit. Very solid for the style.
