Deep, dark ruby color (translucent) with a small tan head. The aroma was full of smoky chocolate, burnt wood, and caramel. The flavor had some of the smokiness in it, but more sweet and bitter than I expected...nice chocolate tones. The feel was quite crisp...medium bodied...semi-wet finish. Thanks Mike (you know I was gonna have to buy that whole "collection" just to rate this thing!)

Bottle. Chocolate malt aroma with a hint of mint. Very dark brown - opaque with little head. Chocolate mallt flavor also with a hint of mint - moderate carbonation with a good hops finish.

Pours a deep brown color, seems slightly watery but forms a nice head. Aroma is roasty and sweet. Flavor has some sweet burnt malt tones but is rather ordinary. Washes off the palate quickly with not much of a finish.

The beer evacuates the 12-ounce brown bottle a deep brown to almost black with a portly light chocolate head that is semi-creamy in texture as it evaporates the lace forms a thick blanket to obfuscate the glass. Nose is lightly toasted grains with a hint of caramel, sweet and fresh, start is lightly sweet with a decent malt profile, top is middling in its feel. Finish is benignly acidic and the hops adequate, quite dry almost chalky in it feel to the palate, a so porter, will not win any ribbons with me.

Pours with a two-finger brown head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Almost black. Light-medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Nose is roasted coffee. Starts and finishes with a sweetish roasted chocolate/coffee flavor. 83¢ for a 12 oz bottle from Market Basket Concord, NH - should be sold in 6-paks instead of two in a 12-pak.

Dark chocolatey brown with solid tan head. Tangy toffee aroma, but pretty light. The flavor is nice ... roasty, but nicely bittered ... like bittersweet chocolate.

Not bad. Dark garnet, not quite opaque. Dense brownish head. Rich caramel and toffee aroma, just a dash of grassy hops. Sweet and rounded up front, with caramel giving way to a semi-sweet chocolate finish. Light hints of coffee and roast in the aftertaste. Decently smooth.

Dark brown in colour with a nice super dense tan head and ruby highlights to the body when tilted. Aroma of nuts, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, metal, blood and caramel-pretty nice aside from the metallic twang. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty malt presence with chocolate coming out in the taste and a slight bitter nuttiness. Aftertaste shows the malt and caramel more than anything else. Overall, better than I had expected from Sam Adams, but not the best porter I could imagine drinking. Definitely a welcome treat from the usual Vienna Style in the Winter pack. Many thanks to Phil (haddon90) for letting me have this bottle! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the 2004 Sam Adams Holiday Sampler Pack on 15-December-2004.

This is a pretty typical porter. The most special thing about it is that the aroma is quite sweet. A pretty typical coffee bitterness and overall dark taste. Not bad.

12 oz bottle: dark brown with golden highlights: thick pour from the bottle with a large frothy brown head. Aroma is filled with lots of mocha/coffee bitterness and toasted oak embers. Slight grit in the palate which was that great, but there was a decent chocolaty flavour, with a good backbone of roasted nuts and even a bit of hops in the finish, certainly not bad…
