2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Caramel color, caramel nose. Thin tan head appears and is gone in an instant. Also some chocolate and nutmeg aromas. Hops are very present in the flavors of this porter, especially toward the bitter finish. Short on the palate and a bit astringent. Not my favorite porter, and not for those seeking the strong roasted malts of a traditional porter, but a noble effort at something different within this genre.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I think this deserves some credit, because beer enthusiasts tend to discount most Sam Adams beers as too commercial. There are a lot of ingredients in this, you can tell. Big aroma, roasted, chocolate, plum, grape, port wine, but also a healthy sense of alcohol creating an odd note. The palate is lively, with bubbly sensations even well after the beer has warmed. Still, it isn’t super-thick, despite an oil swirl of appearance. Some off-white head, very dark brown color (nearly opaque in my glass). The flavor is extremely roasted, coffee, lots of hop kick, chocolate. A lasting bitterness leaves me unsettled--very aggressive on the dark chocolate theme. Not bad, just a little out of whack, or a little over-the-top, for my taste.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Smells like cookie dough, chocolate with some coffee hints. Pours black with nice light brown head. Tastes sweet at first following the chocolate theme but the bitterness of the hops takes over quickly and fades just as fast. Leaves a strange aftertaste in my mouth.

Bottle. Smells like chocolate chip cookies. Notes of cookies, chocolate malts, and coffee come through. Sour aftertaste with a bitter finish. A decent drinkable porter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Body is black, 1/4 inch tan head. Aroma is caramel, butterschotch, chocolate, nice sweet aroma. Taste is heavy coffee, then fades into chocolate and caramel. Very nice for a Sam Adams brew.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: DEC 16, 2005 2004 bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany brown with light tan tinges on the sides and a yellow head. Aroma of hops, light roast and some strange acidity. Nuttiness and light caramel. Flavor is lightly roasty, moderately sweet, with a good musty/dusty English feel to it. Must be the chocolate malt. No alcohol apparency, moderate bitterness on the end. Amazingly, this beer did not lose flavor on the end, and was quite medium-full bodied throughout. No wateriness, good flavor. I was shocked. Typical Sam Adams sharp, fizzy carbonation though.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Somewhat bitter. Tasted herbal like a strong Ricola cough drop. Could use more flavor. Seems like a nice base, a first attempt to ply into something impressive with experimentation.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very dark ruby, black from a distance, tan head. Burnt coffee aroma, light cocoa. Slightly roasty flavor, not quite as burnt, light bitterness. It also has that Samuel Adams house character which is tough to describe but seems to be found in all of their beers. Medium bodied. Not bad, an average porter.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark opaque reddish brown appearance, decent head formation. Malty, fruity charred coffee and cocoa aroma. Roasted coffee malt flavor, mildly chocolaty. Fairly heavy hop bitterness that detracts from some of the traditional porter characteristics.
