3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
12.11.04 12oz bottle. Deep crimson black with little brown head. Aromas are sharp; bitter roasty and berry jam. Flavors start out nice but become somewhat artificial with temp, soapy? Sweet berry along with light chocolate and burnt grain. Finish is a fine balance of bitter and sweet. Good palate throughout is a bit oily, a bit sticky, and a bit effy. One of the better SA beers Iíve had, but still something is off.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On the 12th day of christmas my illegitimate son brought to me sam adams holiday porter and a mediocre beer rating. Decent enough offering from Sam adams. Molasses, rich candy smell and the scent of grain. the taste was a rich coffee mixing with very light hints of chocolate. extremely dry. finished with a slight hop bitter.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown, approaching black, with a thin tan head. Roasty aroma of roasted malts, espresso, and smoke. Flavor is on the hoppy side for a porter: roasted malt up front with strong coffee and chocolate notes, followed by a peppery hop note that fades in the finish. Nice porter with a very smooth mouthfeel.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Darkly cast appearance, yet not quite brown, a dunnish deep burgundy, perhaps, resting under a good-sized, roasty cocoa-tan head, a solid 1/4", slowly shifting down.
Bittersweet espresso aroma, roasted, toasted, lightly spicy, burnt toast, chocolate, and a whiff of coffee grounds...with chocolate getting bigger over time...
Smooth and rich on the palate, light but almost luscious in flavor, sweetness and dark, together in tandem, with a creamy oily coating on the palate. Very well felt in the mouth, fills it fully, swishes flavor all around. Quite nice. Full in body, with a long, chocolatey finish.
Very, very nice porter...my voice rises in the choir to ask what makes it a "holiday" porter...no matter, this is nice nonetheless...why donít they so something this good year íround, I gotsta ask...

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Beautiful black porter with a ceamy dense head. Not much hop nose, but plenty of bitter flavor that balances out the malts nicely.
Very good beer, but more on the "stout" side of porter.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pretty good (as are just about all of the Sam Adams beers). Nie color and aroma. My only complaint is that it could be just a bit sweeter (but thatís just the way I prefer porters and stouts).

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Beautiful deep mahogany color with a one inch plus tan head. Aromas of caramel and chocolate pudding with an earthy hoppiness in the background, absolutely incredible. Very similar aroma to Fullerís. Donít serve too cold, the aroma and flavor will suffer. Nice silky mouthfeel. Flavors of chocolate and coffee that start out with a sweetness, and finish with a harsh, lingering bitterness. It had all the qualities of a good London Porter, but I think they abused the hops a bit. Of course, Iím not much of a fan of overhopped American porters, so if you like them this beer will be great. Well made and deserving of higher ratings, but wonít get them from the SA hating beer snobs out there.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2009 Original rating, December 7, 2004: Black color with a thin head. Coffee aroma. A typical porter blend of coffee and chocolate in the taste. A bit of bitter at the finish. 7/3/6/3/13 Re-rating, March 5, 2009: Dark brown, reddish color with a thin head. Aroma of caramel, biscuit, grains and a little butter. Quite a grainy flavor. Very light roasted barley. Some earthy, English hops on the end. Same rating.

I think Sam Adams gets a bad rap sometimes, and people are overly critical of the brewer. Sam Adams brews high-quality beers, even the ones that are bland and boring. They are still well-made! This beer is no exception. Pours a dark brown color with a medium beige head that dissipated quickly. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma is roasty with malt, dark chocolate and hops. Medium-bodied with bitter chocolate undertones. Malt, caramel and some coffee flavors. The finish is where the hops become more apparent. All in all this Porter is not up there with Fullerís and the like but it is definitely a good beer.
