Samuel Adams Holiday Porter is a full-flavored porter inspired by the famous drink of Londonís Victorian era luggage porters. Brewed with generous portions of Caramel, Munich and Chocolate malt, this hearty porter finishes with traditional English Fuggles and East Kent Goldings. Cheers!

Not a bad porter, but nothing exceptional either. Has the requisite chocolate and licorice. Black and somewheat thick.

January 24th, 2012 - I havenít always enjoyed the Sam Adams boxes of seasonal brews, but the Winter box is pushing some dense, flavorful gems that can compete in boldness and intensity with some of the higher priced bottles lounging rank and file in the fridges. The Holiday Porter is NOT one of these, reminding me as both a buyer and a consumer, that in most mass marketed brewers boxes there is chaff bundled in with the wheat, or the malt (whichever you prefer.) The aroma is predictably malty, but tastefully decorated and wreathed with bits of peat and globs of brown sugar. I find this combination to be enjoyable. But my subtle, self-indulgent grin is cut short when I take a sip, and find something that is bitter, dry and chalky, with a remote but exhausted flavor of chocolate left out and neglected on the kitchen counter.

Okay, so Iím rating a holiday Porter in September. But if it list anything over the months, I canít tell. Great head with a light brown hue that stays around, very dark, almost black. Great taste, rich, almost chocolate. Delicious!

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear deep red brown with a tan head. Caramelized brown sugar and toffee in the aroma. Flavors of roasty caramel, toffee, brown sugar, at times a bit of marshmallow. A little different from the typical porter flavors, but definitely on the watery side.

Poured from a chilled bottle into a glass. Dark brown with a nice tan head. Smells of sweat toasted malt with a slight metallic hint. Smooth roasted porter taste, with a extremely mild bitter after taste.

A - Pours a dark brown garnet color. 1.5 fingers of frothy tan head. S - Chocolate, roasted malt, toasted brown sugar, mild notes of sharp fruitiness. T - Bittersweet chocolate, roasted grain with a smokey character followed by a sharp nuttiness. Sugary malts over burnt toast in the middle. Acidic towards the finish. M - Medium mouthfeel. Smooth body. A nice beer to have on any occasion. Chocolate forward, not overly sweet, and some moderate roast notes. Serving type: bottle 01-07-2011

Not a bad porter, but unremarkable when it comes to all the great ones available. The malt profile isnít really complex enough and that affects the flavor. I like a porter that errs on the side of being more on the coffee/chocolate side of the spectrum. This doesnít get there. Good, but not great.
