Samuel Adams Holiday Porter is a full-flavored porter inspired by the famous drink of Londonís Victorian era luggage porters. Brewed with generous portions of Caramel, Munich and Chocolate malt, this hearty porter finishes with traditional English Fuggles and East Kent Goldings. Cheers!

12 ounce bottle pours a very dark brown almost black with a reddish hue. Light khaki creamy head. Some nice lacing. Aroma of licorice and chocolate with some Earthy undertones. Seems a bit highly carbonated. A Rich coffee chocolate licorice flavor. Seems like it's lacking something though. Good not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

January 24th, 2012 - I havenít always enjoyed the Sam Adams boxes of seasonal brews, but the Winter box is pushing some dense, flavorful gems that can compete in boldness and intensity with some of the higher priced bottles lounging rank and file in the fridges. The Holiday Porter is NOT one of these, reminding me as both a buyer and a consumer, that in most mass marketed brewers boxes there is chaff bundled in with the wheat, or the malt (whichever you prefer.) The aroma is predictably malty, but tastefully decorated and wreathed with bits of peat and globs of brown sugar. I find this combination to be enjoyable. But my subtle, self-indulgent grin is cut short when I take a sip, and find something that is bitter, dry and chalky, with a remote but exhausted flavor of chocolate left out and neglected on the kitchen counter.

Poured a deep black with a light tan, medium head; average lacing. The aroma is sweet, roast malt. Taste is medium bitter, with a hint of sweetness. Medium bodied, somewhere between oily and creamy with an above average carbonation (at least from this bottle) and a slightly bitter finish. Overall, a pleasant porter.

The body has a dark brown almost black appearance with deep crimson highlights when held up to light. Its has a stiff, creamy thick tan head on top that has very good retention and leaves lots of thick tan lacing on the glass. The aroma fills the nose with lots of roasted sweet malts. It has a wonderful full body that starts creamy and sweet on the palate. Quickly more roasted flavors take over with notes of burnt caramel and coffee. There is a quick flash of hop bitterness in the middle before the sweeter roasted flavors take over and fade off slowly into the finish. The texture is full and smooth on the tongue with soft carbonation.

Very impressive light tan head--a full three fingers thick. Initially I didnít see any lace, but as the drink progressed, the lace became more pronounced Chocolate and cream aromas. Thereís also a touch of oily alcohol. The chocolate comes through in the taste, almost like a bittersweet hot cocoa. Very rich body, the carbonation seems a little below average. This has the consistency of the root beer float. Iím having trouble picking up the hop, but can tell itís present because the beer is well-balanced. I recommend this porter.

A good Porter, though nothing special. Little chocolate taste, typical color. Not bad, but not great.
