Sweet and malty aroma with some dark fruit, raisins and a hint of wood. Color is a dark crimson brown. Sweet malty flavor typical of dopplebocks. Sticky and sweet. Some cherry and dark fruity flavors along with some more woods and a hint of spices. Finishes sweet and sticky with a noticable alcohol presence. Eh, its a dopplebock.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2010 A: Poured into a snifter with an average-sized, off-white, creamy head, that hung around at 1/2-finger or so. Body is a beautiful dark amber color, with a slight haziness to it.
S: Nice aroma of heavy malt and caramel tones... sweet, but not too sweet at all.
T: Heavy malt flavor as well... again, the sweetness really comes through, but it’s not cloying at all. Long duration on the flavor. Some alcohol bite and warmth at the finish, but I’d never guess this beer was +9% ABV.
M: Medium-bodied and quite creamy, with lively carbonation.
D: Wow... I like, I like. Never ceases to amaze me how Sam Adams almost always hits the mark with their beers. I’d buy this sucker again in a second. BrewDad (2418), Olympia, Washington, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2009 I had this last night with my Christmas meal. This stuff was great. Lots of caramel, and toffee notes. Not too sweet though. Very well balanced. I gotta say, I was pretty impressed with this being Sam Adams. Cheers! durhambeer (1245), Durham, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Bottle. Of syrup. Pours clear brown with decent beige head. Nose is cloying toffee, sugar, and honey. Some hopes. Some fruit. All things sweet, but none of the more subtle coffee or chocolate notes I generally enjoy in the style. Meh. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 24, 2009 Well-made beer here. Certainly stronger than most European doppelbocks but still quite drinkable. It is also sweeter than most, which gets rid of that nice chalky dryness that I associate with the euro versions, check out Andechs, but this is a very very fine winter beer from Sam Adams. It’s another well-typed "imperial" beer from this series. cmillward (442), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 24, 2009 Pours dark amber with no head that lasts long at all. Sweet toffee, some caramel, light dried dark fruits and some alcohol. Much the same in flavor with sweet toffee and caramel with a fairly strong alcoholic finish, a touch of hop bitterness. Heavy on the palate. porterhouse (1166), Alna, Maine, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 23, 2009 (Bottle) Pours dark golden-brown with a slight reddish hue. A bit hazy. Thin light amber head dissolves to mostly just a ring around edges. Aroma of honey and caramel, lightly fruity and maybe a touch of hay. Mouthfeel is smooth and sticky. Thin, weepy rings of lacing. Flavor is sweet and hot. Caramel and honey with some fruitiness. A little smoke in the finish and a light piney bitter bite. A little more aggressive and perhaps less dry than their other doppel. Fairly good.
