Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pours a one-inch creamy amberish head that recedes quickly. The body is the color of a Rose wine. Nose is subtle lawn clippings. Flavors are simultaneously fruity and bitter with notes of grains, biscuit, cereal, perfume, citrus, grass. Flavors of sweet and bitter are well balanced. Soft carbonation and full body. Good beer, an interesting effort from this brewery for once.

Wow....what a beer. Crazy with the hops. Hops, hops, and more hops. Pours a hazy orange with thin white head. The hallertau hops are everywhere.....aroma, flavor, finish..you name it. From the first spicy aroma to the initial blast of citrus flavors.....some orange and grapefruit...to lingering bitterness and spiciness, this is one fantastic beer that showcases on of the great hop varieties of the world.

12oz bottle. Hazy orange with a small white head that leaves some lasting foam. Nice, big, fruity hops in the nose with plenty of almost tropical notes. Hops and just more hops in the flavor. Quite strong citrus peel, with supporting malts that dont step on the hops at all, just provide a solid stage for them to stand on. Boston lager times two? medium-full body with medium-soft carbonation. This is quite tasty. Pretty much a DIPA, with a bit cleaner profile. By far the best sam adams that Ive had.

2008 release. The commercial description nails it. Citrusy aromas, grapefruit, orange zest, and lime are noticeable. Also caramel and deep dried fruits are present. Flavor is hop forward, with citrus and perfume-y notes coming forward. Also there is a dry stemmy character that is hard to describe, and caramel with roasted malts. Full bodied, good mouth feel.

Poured a cloudy orange, with a good head on it. The aroma is hoppy with citrus notes. The flavor is very, very, very hop bitter, with underlying citrus and pine notes. I just found the bitterness to be unbearable. This is more along the lines of an IPA in flavor.
