Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Fresh bottle (hopefully). Pours clear golden amber with short lived head. Aroma is iced tea, caramel, and floral hops. Flavor is iced tea crazy with floral hoppiness. Really bitter dry finish. Slightly syrupy body. Need to try again and rerate.

Bottle. Aroma has notes of grapefruit, citrus, pear, and some musty sourness. Medium amber hue with an average sized foamy head that mostly diminished and left great lace. Flavor is sweet and malty then pine/citrus then a very bitter finish. Palate is full-medium bodied and lively. Alcohol is well masked. A good beer in every respect.

Medium to heavy body. Somewhat subtle, yet (obviously) hoppy aroma. Floral and caramel notes rounding out the ’’reckless quantities’’ of hops. An enjoyable, slow-drinking beer. A bold, brave, and delightful every-now-and-then treat.

The word ’’pilsner’’ strikes fear into my heart. All I can think of is a skunked bottle of Grolsh or Becks when I hear ’’pilsner’’. With that said, I loved this beer. There’s still a little bit of that bavarian hop skunky bitterness, but more of the hop bitterness is more citrusy. Smelly hoppy, tastes hoppy.

A nicely done , imperial pilsner. Well balanced and even with its strength still resembles a pilsner. Golden pour with an orange tinge and a fluffy white head. Crisp hoppiness, bready malt, grain, hints of lemon zest, and caramel sweetness. Full bodied, but ultimately feels light on the tongue.

I really dig the concept of taking the super hoppy aspects of great pale ales and applying them to a style like pilsner, stout, etc.... This provides the huge floral aromatics of a good IPA. The Beer looks very nice a good sparkling gold color with an aggressive head that leaves tons of lace. This tastes... well it tastes like hops, plenty of grapefruit bitterness, without becoming too lemony citrus like. The beer is considerably cleaner and drier than most ales.

Pours a clear bright copper color with a big creamy head that lasts and laces nicely. Aroma of citrus and pine hops, with some sweet caramel malt in the background. Flavor starts sweet, thick and malty, but the hops quickly show up and balance it out nicely. Nice sweet grapefruit finish. Well carbonated and thick on the palate. More please!
