Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

This one was a gusher...probably donated about 1/5 of the bottle to my countertop/golden retriever (who was very thankful for the high level of carbonation). Anyways, apricot pour with good sized white head which settles nicely. Aroma is primarily piney/grassy hops with some wheat/bread undertones...nothing spectacular. Flavor is pretty APA like...mostly the piney hops coming through...some citrus flavor and a bit of wheat in there (it is a ’pilsner’, right). High level of bitterness on the end...but the description says the intense hops flavor is balanced by the malt...not much malt flavor coming through for me! Not a horrible beer, but I was hoping for something a bit more balanced and was greatly disappointed. This is definitely a one-dimensional ride geared towards hopheads.

This beer smells like the sweet nectar of life! Very strong orange and nectar aroma. Head was orange but went away quickly. Almost no lacing. If you crossed Stoudts and BoulderBrewing Co. Mojo, you would get this beer. Finishes very piney like a good IPA should. If they made this beer with a hint more orange on the nose it would be fantastic. The head went away quickly, and so did the bottle. This is the first Sam Adams I actually like.

Very strong hops and bitter action. Definite Double IPA punch; lots of flavor. Could not believe this was a Sam Adams. Really balanced brew. A pilsner? If all pilsners were like this I would drink them a heck of a lot more!

BB beer co. is a great company & doing great things to expose people to REAL beers. I thank them. Having said that... To the hop heads & ipa folk this beer will likely come highly recommended. To me it was an assult on the palate. The hops were overwelming. I couldnt even tell what the beer tasted like thru the hops. It could have been a pils or pale ale or colt 45 w/ a S*** load of hops dropped in. Many will appreciate it ,but it was not for me.

I bought a 4-pack of this Imperial Pilsner and thought that it was great. It seemed to me that it had a unique hop taste

Hazy orange color, very small white head. Bready hoppy aroma with hints of flowerness. Starts malty, then some bready pine needle hoppy flavors leading to bursts of hop juice in the finish. Long piney, hoppy aftertaste. Ok, it is technically pils, but flavor is more like the crossover of APA and IPA.

beautiful apricot-colored body with no head..nose of light grassy hops complementing the large tropical fruit hints, spice, and yeast..quite exceptional and very inviting..flavor is large in grass and pine with a subtle lemon-like finish..sour funk and yeast present as well..metallic notes in the finish as well
