Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

12 fl oz bottle, BBE March 31, 2008, Systembolaget. Cloudy, almost turbid. Thick head. Hoppy nose, not as big as I had expected, some pineapple. Palate bitter with an elegant subtle malt character in the background, with some alcohol sweetness. Ethanol hop extract with some malt. Rather interesting though. This was the first Imperial Pilsner I had, so I don’t know how it stands up to its style peers.

Bottle. Lekker looking beer, pours cloudy orange with thick foamy white head. Much lacing. Faint hop aroma, with a bit of pine. Full hoppy mouth, more like an IPA than a pilsener Much alcohol, little malt .Lasting hop finish. For me, somehow this beer didn’t quite gel. It’s not a bad beer, by any means, but I can’t rave about it either.

Pours a cloudy orange color. The aroma is a waft of hops. More floral than grapefruit. This is spicy and sweet. The dryness lingers long in a good way. Yes, this is hop juice and I am a sucker for it. Sam Adams impressed me with this one.

The 2007 ofering: Very pleasantly suprised at this. I am not a big fan of Pilsners normally but I am a big fan of hoppy offerings and IPAs. This has a great hoppy aroma...moderatly bitter flavor and great finish.

Bottle. Hazy yellow pour with white head. Hoppy aroma wasn’t as overpowering as I had expected. Very enjoyable. I did not think the hops overpowered this offering. I enjoyed this very much and reminded me of a Sweetwater 420 on steroids.

2007 Edition. Bought this to share with family for Christmas (along with a growler of Troegs!). It’s passable. While it looked nice and smelled okay, the taste of the hops just went to bitter an too grassy for this to be something truly enjoyable. The grass almost, as seen in a review below, tips towards slightly piney. Maybe it was the hop harvest used, I’m not sure. (Bottle Pour 12/24/2007)

250ml bottle (Konttori, Tampere) Cloudy orange, lively yellowish head. Crisp hoppy aroma - whole real hops - quite raw. Lively carbonation, hoppiness clear even before swallowing. Small light malty presence, but quickly replaced by a slightly soapy resiny hop, with a little hint of grapefruit. Could give me hop fatigue, as it was very drying, but 1 was good. Hides the alcohol well. A bit 1-dimensional.

Bottle. Hazy yellow colour with a white head. Hoppy aroma as expected, notes of pine & citrus. Hoppy taste, more citric notes, especially grape fruit. Light alcoholic hints. Nice.
