00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Oct 26, 2007 I was a little disappointed with this one. I am a huge hop head, but this hop just wasnt doing it for me. dont get me wrong this was a good beer, just not what i expected. pours out a cloudy yellow brown color with a small thick head. Aroma is very hoppy. Thats about all i could get from it. flavor was the same and had a dry finish. like i said, this was a good beer, just not quite what i had hoped for. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Oct 25, 2007 Pours a cloudy copper color, with a big, frothy off white head. Smells of some crisp fresh hops, and a mix of some light citrus fruits, and malts. Smells pretty big. The flavor is very big on the hops, the alcohol was quite noticeable too. Kind of sticky on the palate, but very full bodiedfor what it is. Bitter sweet aftertaste, some grain and citrus were rounding it out. Pretty good offering form these guys, certainly one of theri best. Beerman6686 (1266), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 25, 2007 Aroma of hops and more hops, appearance a strange redish color, flavor was hoppy but well balanced, very thin on the palate. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Oct 25, 2007 Beautiful hazy orange with large white fluffy head and nice lacing. Aroma is great, rich sweet hops. Flavor is dominantly hops with light fruit and malt flavors. Very bitter, grapefruit hop flavor. Great all around paleface1982 (13), cabot, Arkansas, USA Oct 24, 2007 2007 bottle.great explosion of hops and a very nice bitterness and finish.strong but not overpowering.too bad this isnt ava.year round. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Oct 24, 2007 2007 bottle. Pours a hazed orangy light amber with a thin relatively dense thin white head. The nose is full of hops. Surprising to see from Sam Adams, not that I’m complaining! This smells great for a european strong lager too, really coming off like a half way decent IIPA in terms of nose. (This is close to 90 min IPA, though not in terms of the malt). The malt is big, but not too round or sweet. Just malty. Alcohol lurks beneath the surface of the nose. Creamy full body with perhaps a good deal of CO2, but not too much by any means. Sweet malt, rounder in terms of caramel and dark malt than I initially thought from the nose. A nice biting freshness to the hops as well that seemed as though it might be a bit garlicy in the nose. A bit creamy. A small amount of diacetyl. A bit fruity, perhaps a touch of apply esters? This is a big bold, interesting beer, and one I wish more of Sam Adams’ beer were like. A bit like Ruinnation. A bit like Hop Juice. But definitely less round in the malt. Clean, bitter hop bite in the finish with some small fruit. mcbackus (725), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Oct 24, 2007 bottle 2007: pours a thick looking orange colour with a pithy looking small white head. aroma is very earthy with pine hops also some sweet sticky malt. flavour starts bitter pine hop with a small amount of the sticky sweet malt, then finishes with some grassy hops that leaves a lingering hop bitterness. the aftertaste knocks down the overall and palate beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Oct 24, 2007 Pale golden hay color, quite dim and hazed with a small/mediumish capping of off-white froth that slips away quickly leaving a trace skim over the top and some big globby strings of lace.
Pleasingly floral and hoppy aroma with a nice twist of lemon rind and lime skin. Bright, clean, fresh, crunchy, and crisp with some small pale malt ascents and biscuity dryness within. Swell nose; I can just picture the commercial where Jim plants his nose into a heaping handful of hops. Classic!
Taste is whole bunch of yum! Very well balanced and drawn upon the fair notion of what some of my favorite IPA’s drum up. Dryish, brisk, crunchy hop tones fly aross the palate quickly with floral citric punch and ponder. Uniquely developed layers and subtle tones make this quite an excellent palate pleaser. There’s a nice tender little under pull of sweet malt thats bordering a candy-like presense, yet keeps mostly dryish, especially as it trials into the finish where it deepens greatly with a nice mix of hop texture, tone, and flavor of floral grasses and pithy citric bitterness grow controllable but powered with lasting vibes.
Feel is about medium if not a bit beyond. There’s a nice flow and ease to it as its balance with remarkably well nurtured sweet and pale malt tones the whole way through. The pithy bitterness of hops is so in control yet present it nearly screams, if not begs, to be nudged with a bit more everything, but yeilds a great sublte complexity instead of grass and dried floral stuff.
Sammy Adams has a winner with this one! Damn solid! Hope to see it stick around for awhile as I know I’ll be pickin’ up more.
