| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 3, 2006 24oz bottle. Served in a 22oz lager glass at 54°. Pours copper with an orange tint and a 1/2", off-white head. The beer laces around the glass and the foam sticks to the sides. Aroma is sweet, grassy hops, caramel, and pears, maybe some lemon. The aroma is very strong and pretty darn good. The initial taste is honey followed by spicy, mildly earthy, mildly piney hops. This tastes like an american barleywine, lots of malt and lots of hops. The mouthfeel is substantial. The finish is moderately bitter, with earthy, piney hops and a small amount of alcohol, which is not detracting. This is a really good beer and although I was reluctant to buy it at first, I am glad that I did. If you enjoy the entire bottle, like I did, you should make sure you have no place to go. Well done, Sam Adams! StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 16, 2005 Mostly translucent and glowing orange in color with a saliva spackle and dusty grey head at first pour. Consecutive pours yield a taller, fluffy head and sticky frapped milk lacing. Honeyed hops aroma, some cedar panels, pine combs, toffee, honey oat whole wheat bread and mildly sugared hot oatmeal. No musty sulfur in the nose. Didn’t know what to make of the first sip, but the second sip conjured up happy hoppy thoughts. Dry, hoppy, spicy, floral montage. Titillating grassy bitterness. You don’t find many beers hopped to kingdom come with Hallertauer, but this is proof positive that it can be done. Malt sweetening by way of caramel and toffee, imparting a slight barnyard barley flavor from the ample helpings of pils malt contributions. Bitter tongue scraper and thirst elicitor. Impeccably balanced, finishing with grassy fields, grapefruit enzyme and trailing whole grain sweetness. Encompassing, dry bitterness lingers long into the night. A nice, tasty surprise. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 10, 2005 This one wasted my tongue. This is Hallertau hop city baby - the aroma is giant - grassy, lemony and beery with some fruit sweetness. More pine needle, bitter goodness throughout the body, which lets just enough candy malt through to balance this beast. The bittering hops just scrape the taste buds off the tongue - I will be tasting this all night, long after the last drop. This is refreshing to say the least. carl4beer (410), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 21, 2005 Poured a most-excellent medium amber with a nice layer of off-white head. Very thorough lacing followed this down. This brew was hop-tacular... hops ran the gamut from citrus (grapefruit and orange zest), pine, and a fresh floral harvest. However, there were soft caramel undertones that provided some balance. Hops first and foremost in the flavor, too... with the little bit of caramel backing it up. Very bitter all the way through, with a long grapefruit finish that was somewhat warming. This was very good, and a little extra malt presence / complexity could’ve made this great. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 12, 2007 12 oz bottle. 2007 release. Poured a clear golden-orange color. Head was thick and white with good retention and lacing. Attractive aroma of malty caramel, subdued pineapple, pear, and flowery hops. There was some delicate sweetness on my tongue which was quickly overcome by moderate hop bitterness of about 6 or 7 on a scale of 10. The bitterness waned temporarily toward the end, but then returned after the finish and lingered on the back of my tongue. The flavor was hop dominated, but well supported by an ample malty caramel backbone, subdued fruitiness, and a warm splash of alcohol. I liked this beer a lot. tennisjoel (953), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 27, 2007 Great hoppy nose. Piney hops with some sweetness from the yeast. Almost ventures into the IPA category. I really think this brew is great, easily my favorite Sam Adams (haven’t sampled the utopia). I’ve never had a great imperial pilsner before, this one is excellent. acertain (249), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 10, 2007 Pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is unlike any pilsner I’ve tried. Very hoppy, with notes of caramel and citrus hops. In the mouth, it’s bitter, very bitter. but yet more balanced than you might expect. Thanks to hogfodder for letting me share this bottle!
