Commercial Description:
2005 info:This lager is made with fresh Bavarian hops, straight off the vines from the 2005 harvest in Germany, and packs an 8.8 percent alcohol content that's twice as strong as most popular beers.
Boston Beer Co. is brewing only 60,000 24-oz. bottles, which are due to begin arriving in stores in November.

2007 release info:
Yes, we're a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world's finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, "hoppy," providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience.
Available in 12oz. bottles.

Bottle: Hazy orange with a medium and steady head, lemon and orange citrus in the nose with some rich cookie dough. Full bodied with a note of alcohol at the end, starts and ends bitter, with some lingering sweetness at the end and a cookie dough aroma. Wow, this is really good for a lager.

24 oz bottle-Man, this was quite a treat! pours slightly hazy orange with a nice soapy white head. At first wiff, a big note of sweet malts-reminds me of Bigfoot for some reason. Notes of apples, caramel, mild citrus, big grassy and spicy hops. really does smell like a hoppy barleywine. Big malt sweetness with a hugely resinous piney/spicy hop finish from those german hops. huge bitterness-big and resinous which dries out the mouth. Awesome beer-Well designed and very tasty. I really dig it and i hope SA makes more along the lines of this one.

24 oz bottle best before January 06.<br. Pours hazy orange, with a thick, chunky, long lasting, orangish head and sheets of sticky lace.
I’m in a quandry here. This is callled a pilsner, imperial or not, it should be clear no? It looks more like an APA or IPA and it looks good, real good.... ah what the hell I’ll give it high marks for appearance.
Aroma is again not very pilsnerish. a little sweetness, but mostly fresh grassy hops, a little peppery. and a little caramel comes out with agitation.
Flavor is sweet/spicy/ lightly bitter. Ruby red grapefruit w/ pith and maybe a bit of zest and 2 teaspoons of sugar. I’ll buy again oh yeah

Pours slightly hazy orangish tan with a huge fluffy white head that sticks around and leaves thick strains of sticky lace. Aroma is of full and fresh spicy, grassy, slightly floral hops with a light slightly toasty malt. Flavor is slightly toasty malt, some caramel, with a very nice grassy, spicy hoppiness. The malt dominates until the hops rise up and create a bitter finish and a lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Its a nice change of pace to have a beer hopped to hell with baverian hops. Very nice beer.

Unbelievably hoppy for a sam adams- I can’t believe the Sam Adams Light is in any way related to this beer...but I’ve seen more diverse families. The acheivement here is the lush creamy and sweet malt that backs up what would otherwise be a caustic hop burn. It comes out quite lovely.

Bottled. Orange colour, only light cloudy. Intense hoparoma, with citric and pine - I would never have guessed aroma hops are German. Juicy hop flavour profile and pretty light in mouthfeel, given the 8,8% abv. Still, a somewhat caramelly maltiness is present but the superb hoppiness carries this beer well from start to finish. The backbone of this beer are the hops, and there is no sign of alcohol. Bitterness perfect, according to the pilsner style, whereas the hop flavour is not, apparently.

Poured a hazy, orange brown color with a small, white head that left sparse lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, pine, toasted dough, and floral hops. Taste was very spicy, mint leaf, grass, citrus fruits, some malts, and a long bitter finish.
