12 oz bottle from Wilbur’s. Deep reddish brown and clear with a small, light tan head and patchy lacing. The aroma and flavor is rich with bready malts, caramel, chocolate, nutty, light vanilla, earthy and light bitterness. Pretty sweet and malty with a touch of dark fruit. Medium body with a thick syrupy feel.and a warming finish. Their original double bock was my first "big beer" (8.8%) so it was interesting to revisit this after 8 years or so.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 sfontain (678) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 4, 2013
Rating #666. 12 oz bottle, Andersons, $2.99. Lighter garnet; frothy light brown head dissipates fairly quickly but can be slightly revived with swirling. Malty, vinous, fruity esters, toast, caramel, nutty, bubble gum. Flavor is slightly flat but similar to aroma; alcohol warmth in the exhale is shy of astringent but not by much (not bad for 9.5% abv). Oily, full, coating texture; medium carbonation is bubbly but granular. Tasty stuff. Good to see such a mass market brand producing high-tier stuff.

Lots of malt. They claim "subtle" hops. A little too subtle; needs a tad more to balance out the sweetness. I even tasted a hint of bourbon; probably because of the high alcohol content.

12oz bottle - pours amber brown with ivory head and good lacing. Nose is caramel. Flavor adds molasses or some sort of natural sugars, and alcohol.very sweet. light to medium body. I think I will add this to styles I don’t get overall.
3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 adeishaqra (28) - - APR 13, 2013
This is a "big" lager indeed. The malt really gives this beer that sweet edge. The German hops add a nice citrus character. A subtle aroma and lingering sweetness in the palate.

Good beer. Caramel sweetness dominates along with a lot of alcohol on the finish. Would have liked more complexity and depth.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 OKplus (549) - Oklahoma, USA - FEB 18, 2013
A - Pours a dark amber. A yellowish brown 2 finger head with good retention. Spotted lines of lacing left behind.
S - Roasted crystal malt. Earthy bread covered in maple syrup. Cherry alcohol.
T - Wow. Much more going on with the flavor. Chocolate and dark fruits-cherry and plum, rich caramel, and molasses.
This one packs a punch in every category. The flavors are elevated and adventurous. A bold and complex Dopplebock that is challenging to pick apart. I thoroughly enjoyed drinking this. For some reason I’ve passed this up so many times. I had no idea it would be this good.
Don’t pass this one up! We need more Dopplebocks like this in the States.

12 oz. bottle from Jewel, Lisle, April ’12. Big malt nose right out of the bottle. Pours a light brown color, though I believe it’s just right for a bock, and a thick head. From the glass, the nose remains malty, sweet, a bit alcoholic, and grainy. Taste carries that nose right on through, with subtle notes of cherry, hazelnut and banana. My bottle’s pretty cold, so the alcohol doesn’t feel that warming. But I suspect I’ll feel its effects before I finish this bottle.
