3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from Jewel, Lisle, April ’12. Big malt nose right out of the bottle. Pours a light brown color, though I believe it’s just right for a bock, and a thick head. From the glass, the nose remains malty, sweet, a bit alcoholic, and grainy. Taste carries that nose right on through, with subtle notes of cherry, hazelnut and banana. My bottle’s pretty cold, so the alcohol doesn’t feel that warming. But I suspect I’ll feel its effects before I finish this bottle.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a very cool looking dark reddish-brown with crimson-orange highlights and a decently tall cream-colored head that settles to a thick ring and film, leaving some spotty ropes of lace. Nose involves dark dense crusty bread, apricot jam, brown sugar, smoky meaty-ness, and some wafts of alcohol. Quite sweet, fairly bitter. Thick, full body, very oily and syrupy, still with a fairly active carbonation, finishing long, a bit smoky, and sweet with brown sugar. Good, but maybe just a bit too hefty body wise, which probably has a relation to the 9.5% ABV.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft - Poured a beautiful burgundy with a smooth head that disappeared too quickly. Nice flavor without the Sam Adams dark beer after taste. I could drink this one regularly.

Bottle from On the Fly Gasmart. Clear brown pour with medium foamy beige head. Very sweet malty aroma, tree nuts, wood, peat. Taste increases the sweetness, slick, almost syrupy feel. Slightly woody, bitter finish.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From the tap at Hop Yard Raleigh NC. Delicious representation of the style. Great depth of flavor especially when slightly chilled. Bready, warming, malty goodness. If you are a dbock fan, you can't go wrong with this one.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazy metallic amber pour, full and frothy tan head. Nose is malt...yeah, malt. Bittersweet. Middle is toffee, and deep malt sweetness. Finish shows pleasant mild hop bitterness, controlled by malt sweetness. Some of the German ones may be more subtle, but this is a solid Doppelbock.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Wow, from the 2015 edition bottle, this pours an an absolutely beautiful beer. Perfect dopplebock reddish mahogany color, with vibrant lacing and a soft pillowy head (it just looks worthy of such descriptive adjectives). Aroma is distinctive in a positive way, features standard rich malty and red fruit notes, but also some grassy noble hoppiness, also a hint of dark chocolate. Flawless so far. At first sip, a little tart but not too much, maltiness isn't as overwhelming as expected. Complex layers follow one another, first malt, then slight noble hops, then a chocolate cocoa finish. Pleasantly surprised at the minimal booziness. Warming indeed, though the palate doesn't betray the high ABV. Mouthfeel is full and smooth, "velvety" as the bottle claims. I am thoroughly impressed. I think this is truly the best dopplebock I have ever had, although the flavor intensity could use a small boost. Nonetheless, an excellent variation of the style, I especially appreciate the hoppiness that seems to be rare in most doppelbocks. Try it!!!
