Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Bottle, thanks Sevenhokie! Subtle coffee aroma followed by a hint of dark chocolate. Pours black with a thin light brown head and decent lacing. Thick, oily mouthfeel with dark chocolate to start. Roasty coffee flavor dominates the finish with that same coffee flavor lingering on the palate. Not a favorite.

Rather muted in the beginning, then a reasonably dense aroma of coffee, japanese soy sauce, dark bread and dark chocolate. The palate is medium bodied, semi-sweet with a light bitterness. Slightly tame and lacking the kick of the best Imps.

(Bottle). The scent is big, sweet and slightly sticky with hints of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and barrel. The taste is variable, at first very roasted malt and chocolate, then sweet milk chocolate and then sweet malt and figs.

God ettersmak.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance has a black colored body yields a nice two finger tan head that slowly concaved into the body leaving beautiful spotty spider web lacing. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. The smell was coffee, chocolate and plums up front and were all powerfully strong. The taste was dry in the coffee and chocolate flavorings and added a semi-sweetness that helped to round it out. The palate was heavy on the body, this was exceptionally smooth on my tongue, but not watery. I would say this was fairly drinkable. Overall, this was good for me and good for its style. I would come back to this again.

From a bottle. Pours thick and black, like used motor oil. Thick dark beige head. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, coffee and gypsum. Flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, raisin, biscuit and vanilla. Finishes with vanilla and a sturdy hop bite. Surprisingly good for a Sam Adams offering.
