Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

12 oz bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Appearance: This beer, rather gently poured, raised only a thin layer of head that soon reduced to a thin ring and small island. It is a pitch black in the glass, and opaque, but with dark brown edges visible in the pour. Smell: Dark roasted grains, chocolate, molasses, roasted coffee, a hint of sherry and a trace of smoke. Taste: Black light-roasted coffee, molasses, dark toast, burnt caramel, chocolate, raisins, dried plums, vanilla, and faint smoke. Lingering aftertaste features dark roasted grains and black coffee but is only mildy bitter. Excellent flavor integration. Mouthfeel: Very smooth and full bodied; good, light carbonation. Overall: Excellent RIS with moderate complexity.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2015 Excellent Imperial Stout. Doesnít quite stand out like some of the best stouts but $10 a four pack compared to many that are $10+ a bomber you canít go wrong. Dark black with dark khaki head. Smells of dark chocolate a little licorice/candy/anise and cappuccino. Taste is the same and goes down pretty easy for an imperial. Very slight warming but not boozy at all.

Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Solid brown head. Caramell aroma with some dark malts. Nice taste with both caramell, bitterness and roasted malt. Medium body.

Aroma is roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. The taste mirror the aroma and also adds some faint liquorice and lead you to a semi-dry and bitter finish. Thereís nothing wrong with this one, even if itís not really "up there". A decent Imperial Stout.

"i agree with Brettís review almost word for word, but i guess i liked the beer just a bit more. a solid contribution, if not one of the bestter Imperial Stouts out there. The aroma, while on the sweet side, was quite appealing. Needs a little more IBUs to be balanced, but itís choclatey, malty, raisiny good. The abv is masked well at first, but not as it warms. Starts quite good at 53 degrees...becomes a little overly sweet as it warms, but still ok and smooth. One of Boston Beer Coís better offerings. I may revisit once my 4-pk is gone, but Storm King and Rasputin are better for the same price. Definitely worth a shot, though...glad I tried it. 4/09-when tasted against other (better) impyís, the shortcomings are more obvious, but still an enjoyable brew. 11/09-not aging well...not bad, but getting less complex...just kinda sweet and overpowering. Hmmmm."

Jet black color, light brown head. Roasted coffee nose, nuts, licorice, dried fruit. Dark chocolate taste, coffee, sweet licorice, roasted malt, nicely balanced. Full body, soft carbonation, thick texture.

Transfer from BA review on 10-31-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance Ė The beer pours a black color with a small foamy brown head. The head fades rather fast leaving a light level of sticky and streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma of the beer is big of dark chocolate with a nice big smell of caramel and vanilla. They are joined by some other aromas of a roasted espresso and some light dark fruit smells. With a mild warming boozy aroma the mix of smells gives a very nice chocolaty and sweet dessert like aroma. Taste Ė The taste begins with some milk chocolate and a nice roasted malt taste. Right from the start, there are some sweeter flavors of vanilla and caramel mixed with some lighter dark fruit flavors. As the flavor advances some of the sweeter flavors dwindle, transitioning the milk chocolate flavors to a more dark chocolate nature. Along with these changes, so too comes some coffee flavors to the tongue. They start out more mild in the middle, but as the flavor advances to the end they become more bitter and roasted taking on a more espresso like nature. Some sweetness seems to return to the tongue at the end, and is joined by a light char and boozy taste to leave a nice mix of chocolate, sweet, coffee, dark malts and booze to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel Ė The body of the beer is thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is average. While a slightly lower carbonation may have been a bit better for the style, the thick body is quite fantastic for the flavors coating the mouth in all the nice dark and sweet flavors. Overall ĖOverall the brew had a nice blend of chocolate, coffee, sweet, roasty and malty. A quite tasty and enjoyable imperial.

Finally drinking a bottle Iíve have in the fridge for a few years. This pours a pitch black color with a slight brown head. The aroma is filled with coffee, toffee, and robust tones. The flavor is big, bold, and full of flavors. This is a sweet, robust beer that delivers in the flavor category. This brew has really held up over the years Iíve had it. Maybe a little bourbon aging with help this beer *hint hint Jim Koch*
