Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Impressive three finger head; leaves huge chunks of "lace" on the glass. The color near black where no light shines through. Smell of freshly ground coffee. Attractive. More creamy tasting than the smell would indicate. Still, this could be a coffee stout. No notable alcohol taste or feel. The body is lower than most stouts, but not dramatically so. Great and lasting aftertaste of dark chocolate and coffee. Touch of chalk.

Black in color with very little head. Sweet, licorice, almost Pepsi aroma. Lite aroma, hard to identify the smells. Bold taste, grapes, raisin, smoke, caramel, bitterness on the end. Good beer.

Svart med ljusbrunt litet huvud. Inte jätteintensiv doft för att vara en stout, men den doftar sött med toner av choklad och kaffe. Smaken är frisk och syrlig med tydlig smak av kaffe och choklad. God men inte fantastisk

Aroma of spiked Mocha latte with hints of licorice and vanilla. Pitch black with brown head that settles quickly. Monster chocolate and coffee flavor that tastes closer than 12% than 9 and change. Thick although not particularly heavy body. Not as subtle as most Samuel Adams’, and not better off for it.

Bottle. Pours a jet black body with a large creamy caramel head. Nose is caramel, licorice, leather and coffee. Classic English-style setup; I like it. Taste is equally tasty and straightforward: loads of licorice, coffee and dark caramel flavors with hints of creamy leather and dark berries. Full and smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Lovely, timeless imperial stout in the English ("Russian Imperial Stout") tradition.

Appearance: Black color with a fine big beige head. Nice lacing.
Aroma: Chocolate, licorice and coffee.
Palate: Medium + body. Tad sweet, and an ok bitterness. Average to soft carbonation.
Taste: Chocolate, rich licorice and coffee. Well hidden alcohol.
Overall impression: Tasty evening sipper. Just a bit to much licorice for me.
Personal stats: Bottle from Systembolaget in Strömstad, Sweden.

Bottled: unk. Newer label design Dark black with a broken mocha sheet leaving spotty lace. Smells of chocolate, black cherry, caramel, licorice and molasses with a little bit of raisin. Alcohol is the first thing I taste, then there is a good dose of toasted malts and cocoa tones with a little metallic season on the finish. There are some coffee grounds and sweet malts as well. Medium on thin for the style with a hi carb for the style. Semi dry finish. The beer is decent, and apporachable. I would recommend this as a starter Impy stout as it carries the character without spoiling the newcomer with the best aspects. Serving type: bottle 03-28-2012
