Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Appearance: Black color with a fine big beige head. Nice lacing.
Aroma: Chocolate, licorice and coffee.
Palate: Medium + body. Tad sweet, and an ok bitterness. Average to soft carbonation.
Taste: Chocolate, rich licorice and coffee. Well hidden alcohol.
Overall impression: Tasty evening sipper. Just a bit to much licorice for me.
Personal stats: Bottle from Systembolaget in Strömstad, Sweden.

Bottled: unk. Newer label design Dark black with a broken mocha sheet leaving spotty lace. Smells of chocolate, black cherry, caramel, licorice and molasses with a little bit of raisin. Alcohol is the first thing I taste, then there is a good dose of toasted malts and cocoa tones with a little metallic season on the finish. There are some coffee grounds and sweet malts as well. Medium on thin for the style with a hi carb for the style. Semi dry finish. The beer is decent, and apporachable. I would recommend this as a starter Impy stout as it carries the character without spoiling the newcomer with the best aspects. Serving type: bottle 03-28-2012

Svart med lys brunt skum som legger seg for fort. Kaffe, dadler alkohol og lakrislukt. Medium søt, lett bitter, litt salt lakrissmak. Lite kullsyre, kort bitter ettersmak.

355ml bottle. Nearly pitch black with a big nice mocca coloured crown. Notes of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and hops. The alcohol punches through quite clearly.

I have had this bottle for a while, possibly it is 3-4 years old? Purple label with a red banner. No date on it. It’s been in the fridge for most of that time. Licorice, roast, prunes and dark caramel in the nose. Thick bodied with a somewhat balanced, slightly warm finish. Flavor of raisins, prunes, dates, roasted barley and lesser notes of dark chocolate melted into sweetened, condensed milk. Once again, a quality beer from BBC.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours oily black with a creamy dark mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving a thick creamy trace on the glass. Smell is malty and balanced with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, brown sugar sweetened dark roast coffee, tar, charred wood, caramel, burnt cookies, hay and sweet dark bread. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, charred wood, alcohol, moist soil, sweet liquorice candy, caramel, hay, burnt cookies and toffee. Mouthfeel is round, oily, boozy, tiny roasted astringent and near full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with roasted malts, charred wood, toffee, caramel, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate and hay. A nice surprise! Very good simple Imperial Stout...

January 28th, 2012 - The Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is a different beast from the small bottles lining the grocery store beer shelves around town. The distinction is emphasized right from the beginning with the first smell: a thick beefy and pot roast smell, and the creamy richness of cream of mushroom soup, all ladled over a tough and powerful core of roasted malt. It’s powerful, and even a little tasty. The flavor is also strong. Booze infects the system on the first sip, and immerses the drinker’s palate in a thick, raisin-filled concoction, laced with fig and brown sugar. This is a punchy, powerful brew, and its stout quality leans towards the sweeter side, pushing a nice balance between raisin and the almost-cloying fig aftertaste that resonates at the end of each sip. Could I have a box full of this instead of Fezziwig’s for the holidays?

Creamy crown. Dark roasted malt and mineral aroma. Smoky taste of charcuteries, with hints of red berries and cocoa. Nice aftertaste.
