Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Flaska från SB. Stiltypisk Imperial Stout.

God ettersmak.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance has a black colored body yields a nice two finger tan head that slowly concaved into the body leaving beautiful spotty spider web lacing. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. The smell was coffee, chocolate and plums up front and were all powerfully strong. The taste was dry in the coffee and chocolate flavorings and added a semi-sweetness that helped to round it out. The palate was heavy on the body, this was exceptionally smooth on my tongue, but not watery. I would say this was fairly drinkable. Overall, this was good for me and good for its style. I would come back to this again.

From a bottle. Pours thick and black, like used motor oil. Thick dark beige head. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, coffee and gypsum. Flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, raisin, biscuit and vanilla. Finishes with vanilla and a sturdy hop bite. Surprisingly good for a Sam Adams offering.

Bottle at home. Clear black. Aroma heavy malty (roasted, burnt, chocolate). Flavor light sweet, medium bitter of dark malts and US hops, notes of chocolate. Medium body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle@ahven. Black tan head. Roasted intense nose. Pretty neutral though, sort of the average joe of risses- not overly salty, chocolately, oaky or anything, has jus a little of everything. Full body medium dry. Dark chocolate, bitters. Ok, easiky forgot though.

Impressive three finger head; leaves huge chunks of "lace" on the glass. The color near black where no light shines through. Smell of freshly ground coffee. Attractive. More creamy tasting than the smell would indicate. Still, this could be a coffee stout. No notable alcohol taste or feel. The body is lower than most stouts, but not dramatically so. Great and lasting aftertaste of dark chocolate and coffee. Touch of chalk.
