Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

2011 vintage. Hello motor oil. Khaki head. Certainly smells like alcohol. Kinda hot. Surprisingly light body. Roasted almost burnt coffee. Thanks Seymour.

Pours rich black with deep dense khaki head. The whole glass is lacy. Aroma is generously roasted with chocolate and almond coffee. Taste is bitter chocolate and black coffee with a malty sweetness to balance. Alcohol is good at hide and seek. Thick, creamy and smooth in the mouth. Very rich beer. Nicely done.

2009 bottle. Big nose of raisins, sherry and a bit of mocha right under the cap. Solid black body with a slightly lacy brown head. Sherry in the taste, too. Here’s a bit of roast coffee I couldn’t find in the nose. A bit cheesy, like a Belgian with stale hops. Could there be a Belgian yeast to make this beast? Yeah, some licorice, and a sip of vanilla. Taste stays strong. Alcohol makes itself felt pretty early on, not in the taste but in me. A big beer that ages very well.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured black with with a nice brown head, leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of brown sugar, roasted malts and some booze too. Taste was sweet, earthy, some roasted malts, slightly bitter end and surprisingly smoother than I expected, balanced and complex. Very good Beer.

0.355 l bottle at Hilpeä hauki, Helsinki. Black color, tan head. Aromas of charred bread and burnt black currant. Sweet and roasty flavor with charred bread, black currant, dark fruits, some toffee and some caramel. Full soft body. Classic IS, somewhat similar to Samuel Smith’s IS. I would like to have this a bit more roastier and/or more bitter.

Nice job. Smell sweet, roasted malts followed by alcohol. Really nice dark color will very small dark ring. Good lacing. Palate was smooth and oily and coated your mouth. Not too heavy. Carmelized malts but not necessarily roasted. Dark fruits and alcohol. A solid effort for the style.

Bottle aging for at least 2 years. Pours cola with a dark chocolate head. Aroma is molasses, dark chocolate and booze. Taste is on the bittery burnt side, but in a good way. Finish is dry. Solid.

Bottle from ck1, thanks bro! Cellar aged a year - at cellar temperature. Pours a very dark brown with a tan head leaving some spotty lacing. Aroma has dark chocolate and cocoa, expresso and roast. Taste is of semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malts and anise. Light to medium bodied; thin for a stout. Some alcohol presence. Finishes sweetly bitter with a bit of length due mostly to the alcohol. Love the smell - so bittersweet chocolatey with body - but it did not carry into the beer.

12 oz bottle from Wilbur’s. Black with a brown head and patchy lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, licorice, dark fruits and dark chocolate. Similar flavor, fairly sweet with a light body for the style. Kind of messy, I guess. Oily, slick and soft mouth feel with a lingering anise finish. The alcohol is mostly hidden. I love impy stouts, but this one can GTFO!
