Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

10/11/11/13/12/12

A deep dark stout with a thick dark brown head, lacing and onctuous. In aroma, a sweet musty chocolate malt with light vinous notes, alcohol. In mouth, a nice roasted malt with chocolate powder, vinous qualities, alcohol warmth, a bit aged, but solid.

Bottle poured a clear dark brown nearly black with a lingering ring of brown foam. Aromas of alcohol, pepper, dark chocolate, roasted malt, fruittiness and licorice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of pepper, bitter chocolate, roasted malt, licorice and dark fruit with a smooth warming lingering licorice finish.

Bottle. Pours opaque with an average, fizzy, dark brown head, lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, molasses, nutty), light hop (perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of prune, smoke, and wood. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

@Mondial de la Bière 2010, Strasbourg - pitch black coloured and with a moderate beige foam left; robust aroma of licorice and cold coffee; full-bodied and with some sweetness below, a solid bitterness and a long chocolatey finish; pretty dry with lingering notes of licorice

Bottle… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Good retention. The aroma is too throttled to address, even when warmed to room temperature – maybe a hint of licorice or anise. No real espresso or chocolate notes… maybe some soy sauce. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is pretty unpleasant – anise, acrid and salty. Finishes much the same. Just a train wreck of a beer. I’ll give this one another chance at some point in the future; but for now, I couldn’t be more disappointed. I hope I simply happened upon a bad bottle - an anomoly.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a fairly small tan head. Very sweet chocolate malty nose with a hint of anise. Incredibly sweet dark malty flavor with just a touch of bitterness on the finish. Too sweet in my opinion.

Poured at the Gulfstream beer fest in Miami. Dark, dark brown pour with a small brown head. Aroma is very chocolatey and roasted malt. I smell some coffee as well. Flavor is ok, but there is something weird in it...reminds me of imitation vanilla extract or something. Chocolate flavor would be nice and the roasted malts are integrated well, but the odd vanilla flavor messes this up a bit.
