COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Bottle… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Good retention. The aroma is too throttled to address, even when warmed to room temperature – maybe a hint of licorice or anise. No real espresso or chocolate notes… maybe some soy sauce. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is pretty unpleasant – anise, acrid and salty. Finishes much the same. Just a train wreck of a beer. I’ll give this one another chance at some point in the future; but for now, I couldn’t be more disappointed. I hope I simply happened upon a bad bottle - an anomoly.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark black color with a large sized brown head. Nice lacing left on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, roastiness, anise, and licorice. Tastes of roast, chocolate, caramel, licorice, some dark fruitiness, and anise. Alcohol content well hidden.

A very good RIS because of its mouthfeel, and it stops short of being astringent in bitterness. Good drinkability and satisfying.

Very deep dark black beer with a thick sticky brown head. Nice looking brew really. Aroma is sort of sweet with a strong note of industrial pale malt. I really think that Sam Adams has one of the most distinct house characters of any brewery out there, but unfortunately that character sucks. Peppery booziness and a bit of berryish fruitiness. Black licorice, anise, and cocoa/coffee nose. Flavour is sweet and sticky but it isn’t all that good. Meh, I can’t really say I’m a fan.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Alraomon. Thanks! Pours very dark brown with a medium head. Fair head retention and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, anise, tobacco. Taste is intense roasted malts, bitter coffee, tobacco and green apple. Full bodied. Some alcohol is noticeable.

Bottle. Pours black. Tan head. Nose/taste of molasses, roast chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Touch of lactose. Body is on the thin side for an imperial. Decent all around brew.

3fourths (7861) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - AUG 20, 2009
UPDATED: AUG 21, 2009 Nose: fudge, cake, soy sauce, acetone. Texture: chalky, mildly abrasive, turning soft/pillowy across the back. Body: medium to light. Flavor: dark chocolate, roast, soy sauce, burnt fudge brownies. Middle of the sweet/dry spectrum. Lacks depth, lacks distinction, flavors fade quickly, dissolves into a flavorless syrup in the finish. Passable.

Bottle thanks to Swalden28. Pours thick with a dark brown head and a black body. When swirled it leaves a film on the glass. Aroma of fruits, tootsie roll, fusel alcohol, and chocolate. Taste is chocolate, alcohol fruity pebbles and coffee. Mouthfeel is syrupy with alcohol on the palate and light carbonation. This beer needs some time to condition. Nice work Boston Beer!

Small cream to brown-beige head over dark brown, nearly black beer. Solvent, banana, and some dark malts. Aroma’s of Bourbon coffee, alcoholic and burnt, touch lactic. Sweet, dried apricots, again solvent, and a little roastiness, hinting at classic stout-acidity. Milk and black chocolate; vanilla retronasal. Medium to full-bodied, slick, alcoholwarming. Quite sweet, but also nicely warming I.S.

Pours onyx with 1-finger brown head that dissipates quickly. Nose is dark malt, dark choc, cacao, molasses, anise, hops. Tastes rich, smooth, malty and chocolatey, with a complex papate that gives cacao, backup hops, molasses, and prune flavors. This is a very goos beer. Not a world beater, but a nice style.
