Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Black with a medium deep beige head. Sweet aroma with bruned malt, dark bitter chocolate and mollasses. Sweet flavour with burned malt, dark bitter chocolate and espresso and liquerice. Finished sweet and full bodied.

Poured at the Gulfstream beer fest in Miami. Dark, dark brown pour with a small brown head. Aroma is very chocolatey and roasted malt. I smell some coffee as well. Flavor is ok, but there is something weird in it...reminds me of imitation vanilla extract or something. Chocolate flavor would be nice and the roasted malts are integrated well, but the odd vanilla flavor messes this up a bit.

Bottle… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, light brown head. Good retention. The aroma is too throttled to address, even when warmed to room temperature – maybe a hint of licorice or anise. No real espresso or chocolate notes… maybe some soy sauce. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is pretty unpleasant – anise, acrid and salty. Finishes much the same. Just a train wreck of a beer. I’ll give this one another chance at some point in the future; but for now, I couldn’t be more disappointed. I hope I simply happened upon a bad bottle - an anomoly.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a fairly small tan head. Very sweet chocolate malty nose with a hint of anise. Incredibly sweet dark malty flavor with just a touch of bitterness on the finish. Too sweet in my opinion.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark black color with a large sized brown head. Nice lacing left on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, roastiness, anise, and licorice. Tastes of roast, chocolate, caramel, licorice, some dark fruitiness, and anise. Alcohol content well hidden.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of dark roasted espresso, roasted malt, dark chocolate and a slight hop bitterness. Flavour of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt - slight bitter finish, with the chocolate really settling in as a lingering aftertaste. Impressive.

A very good RIS because of its mouthfeel, and it stops short of being astringent in bitterness. Good drinkability and satisfying.

Pours an opaque black color with a medium khaki head that recedes steadily. Clingy patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt and coffee. Medium to full body, with flavors of dark chocolate, coffee and sweet malt. Some mildly bitter hops are present too. The finish is dry and roasty with coffee and muted chocolate left behind. A decent introductory type of Imperial Stout overall.

Bottle. Dark chocolate, licorice, cinnamon, and cafe latte aroma. Oil black with minimal head - pours like oil. Initial flavor of creamy chocolate then light licorice and sharp grassy hops finish. Not as complex as some Imperial Stouts but still very nice.
