Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Bottle, 12 oz. Purchased about a week ago. Pours dark brown, opaque (I am drinking from a wide mouth glass, though). Dark tan head that thins quickly. Faint aroma of coffee with a hint of nuts and raisins--reminds me of trail mix. Bubbly mouthfeel. A little more carbonation than I expected. Tastes lightly sweet at first, then of alcohol, then goes bitter quickly. The bitter lingers for 15-30 seconds after each sip. Compared to other beers in general, I would say this is a good beer. However, compared to other imperial stouts, this one is mediocre at best.

Bottle from the rotter. Nose is full of molasses, tar, sticky chocolate, fudge. Everything I want in an Impy stout aroma. Pitch black with minimal brown colored head. Taste is lightly tart, acidic, sweet, almost rum and raisin, just sticky and sweet. Not much bitterness but isn’t cloying either. A touch of warming. Pretty solid.

(Samuel Adams Imperial Series Imperial Stout) Bottle 355 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 9.2% Totally black colour on the body, tall and thick, creamy, dark rown head on top, with excellent retention. Aroma of roasted malts, olive pit, light vanilla, chocolate, light alcohol. Taste follows, roasted malts, coal, even more chocolate now, faint alcohol, anise indeed. Medium to thick body, good carbonation, sticky and smooth on the palate. Great!

Pitch black pour, visibly thick, with a dark espresso head that is slow to rise to the surface. Smells like roasted malts, dark cherries, walnuts, lactose and scotch whiskey. Promising! The taste doesn’t disappoint - dried fruit (figs, raisins) covered in dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee beans, vanilla, oak. A warm spicy aftertaste with notes of pepper and anise. Super thick mouthfeel, a bit choking at times, but quite pleasant. No carbonation present.

35.5cl bottle from Systembolaget. Best before 2016-02-01. No batch or brew date. It poured a pitch black colour with a massive brown creamy head. Aroma is roasted barley, coffee, dark chocolate, liqorice and some spices. Hints of alcohol. Flavour is rich and complex. Lots of dark cocoa, coffee, roasted malts and liqorice. The alcohol is more prominant than the aroma, but not in a bad way. Bitter at first, but getting smoother with each sip. Aftertaste is a bit short.

Bottled. Pours deep brown nealy black with a small to average tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and vanilla notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with a hint of bitterness. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. A nice Impy indeed. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Bottle camping in France. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice, soy sauce, molasses and some bready yeast. Flavor is very bitter, dry, burnt malts and quite black. Not a hint of sweetness in this one. Decent body and a smooth texture.
