COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our take on the stout brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavors like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Pours with the darkest head I remember seeing in a long time. The smell gushes out of this beer, had a full on smell of it while the tulip was still on the counter. A bit overpowering up close obviously. Palate suffers from the brew having too much residual sugars. The buckets of malt are burnt to a crisp and the whole package comes off as being a single flavor assault.

Bottle aging for at least 2 years. Pours cola with a dark chocolate head. Aroma is molasses, dark chocolate and booze. Taste is on the bittery burnt side, but in a good way. Finish is dry. Solid.

Bottle from ck1, thanks bro! Cellar aged a year - at cellar temperature. Pours a very dark brown with a tan head leaving some spotty lacing. Aroma has dark chocolate and cocoa, expresso and roast. Taste is of semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malts and anise. Light to medium bodied; thin for a stout. Some alcohol presence. Finishes sweetly bitter with a bit of length due mostly to the alcohol. Love the smell - so bittersweet chocolatey with body - but it did not carry into the beer.

12 oz bottle from Wilbur’s. Black with a brown head and patchy lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, licorice, dark fruits and dark chocolate. Similar flavor, fairly sweet with a light body for the style. Kind of messy, I guess. Oily, slick and soft mouth feel with a lingering anise finish. The alcohol is mostly hidden. I love impy stouts, but this one can GTFO!

Dark chocolate, espresso, anise, and hints of soy on the nose. Black with a lasting, dark tan head. Dry, roasty, earthy, and savory, with flavors of earthy cocoa, molasses, and subtle licorice. Full bodied with low carbonation, sticky, and finishes with lingering earthy roastiness.

12 oz bottle, Andersons, $2.99. Pours nearly opaque black; smaller tan head turns to a tiny ring; very light lacing. Aroma heavy chocolate, along with lighter licorice, coffee, roast, prune, and maybe barely vanilla; some slightly unappealing sourness here. Flavor is heavy on the chocolate and the vanilla is easier to detect here; the sourness is significantly worse here; some alcohol warmth. Medium-heavy body, super sticky; not quite fizzy but not far off and certainly not that smooth. Not terrible but the lesser of the Sam Imperial series beers.

I don’t think that I have ever had a beer start with so much promise and then....Very good aroma. Good head. Nice dark appearance. BUT too cloying. Too much dried fruit taste. Not balanced. Nice try, but back to the drawing board. Guinness is too widely available to substitute this for.

Bottle. Very thick and chewy, hints if plums, coffee, molasses, musty to flat taste from the age. Full taste after a second or two. Okay aftertaste. Try for the record, but nothing to go out of the way for.

A nice and creamy IS. Nice and well crafted. (Short review due to bad notes)
