3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a cloudy amber-brown color with some highlights around the side and a small off-white head. Aroma starts off a little musty and off, but eventually the malts emerge- smoky, peaty, chocolaty, caramel- along with some earth, sugar, and wood. Flavor demonstrates a ton of malt character, too, with caramel, smoke, chocolate, peat, toast, earth, leaves, and spices. Medium-bodied, with a lightly smoky, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. No trace of the 10% ABV can be found. Nice malty sipper.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is that of peat smoke, dark fruit and some toffee. The flavor is more complex than the aroma. I get a lot of peat smoke, cherries, grapes, plums, toffee and some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A nicely balanced wee heavy where the alcohol is present, but not overpowering. Very drinkable.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a dark brown. Heavy sweet malt, molasses, dried dark fruit, light brown sugar, earthy, and a little peat. Medium body, but seems light in contrast to the malt. Too sweet for me, but decent.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
The pour is a very deep, dark ruby color with a moderately full, dark beige, pillowy head which is somewhat lasting and leaves scattered, frothy lace. The nose is very peaty, very hard to find other notes; underneath the peat I find raisin, molasses, brown sugar, and dark breads. The flavor is still peat-dominant but does allow for some malt richness to show through; lots of brown sugar, light raisin, some molasses, faint roast, and slight nuttiness. The palate is more than medium, nearly lively, and a bit slick in texture. The beer finishes fairly long with still brown sugar, slight raisin, peat, and an herbal/leafy bitterness. About what I expected from SA, nice attempt with plenty of flaws. The peat is way overdone, especially considering that a good scotch ale derives the peat notes from the yeast and Scottish water. Also, the palate is weak, and the finish does not lead me to want another sip with the misplaced bitter notes. Typical SA beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a solid dark brown with deep ruby highlights when held to light. Small tan head dissipates slowly. Smell is very malty and sweet, I swear I smell Leather, Hints of burnt sugar & Smoke. Taste is sweet with all of the aromas accounted for in the taste. Starts off sweet with the syrupy malt and smoke, then leaves a long lingering mild alcohol burn at the end. Seems typical of the Sam Adams imperial series to be a bit hot with alcohol. Very little hop presence to be found. Pretty good Scotch Ale, there are others better, but Sam usually has "Good" not "Great" Brews.
