4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark mahogany/ruby red with a nice tan head, solid retention and excellent, thick lace. Well-defined aromas of dark fruit - figs, dark cherries, dates - and roasted malt. Dark fruit flavors also dominate, but there’s much more - caramel, brown sugar, molasses, peat, and smokiness in a very well-balanced profile. Medium to ful body, silky, creamy smooth mouthfeel, little carbonation, and a very long sweet finish. Gets better as it warms.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark garnet in color, bubbly, with a tan, leathery colored head of a solid finger due to an agro-pour. Nice lace.
Aroma is slightly sweet, a tad peat smoky, roasty, and malty. Dark fruits too.
Taste is pretty much like the aroma, but more dark fruits, a bit of hops and less smoke.
Its a bit bubbly for the style, but it’s creamy, and smooth. More lighter bodied for the style.
Overall a nice overing too the imperial series and I think my second favorite short of the RIS.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Purchased at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed before my band’s LP release show. Appearance a dark but not too thick brown/chocolate with a rich off-white head. Aroma mostly of malt, maybe some dark fruit/figs, also a bit of roast/smoke in it; not a dominant aroma but also not too thin. Taste of alcohol and malt, somewhat sour mouthfeel, sweet, also has that fig/dark fruit backing. While it is slightly complex the sourness just turns me off for this one, not really enjoying this.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Aroma has notes of toasted and roasted malts, smoke, peat, caramel, dried dark fruits and cereal. Deep dark amber brown hue with a small light tan foamy head that mostly diminished and left a decent amount of speckled lacing. Very sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is very full bodied and oily average with a medium dry finish. Overall a good example of the style and definitely a step in the right direction for the company. Good job Sam Adams.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle from Jonathan Ron. Poured as beautiful as I was hoping into my Double Bastard glass, deep dark reddish brown that was thick and viscous sitting underneath a full thick dense beige head that left a smattering of lace. Aroma was all malt driven with dark fruits, raisin, earth, peat, alcohol. Great body with a full almost creamy mouthfeel with lively small bubble carbonation and just enough heat to let you know this is a sipper that really lingers in the back of your throat for a fee minutes. Flavor of peat, earth, alcohol, dark malts, dry bread, cardboard and smoke. Wow this is Sam Adams, very well done.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
medium/dark brown with large tan head. nose of smoked malt with some crystal. some bitterness before some low crystal malt before touches of roast and smoked malt. some funky yeast esters before a very nice dry finish with lingering depth from the alcohol. to be honest, one of the better sam adams beers i’ve had. very impressed

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a cloudy amber-brown color with some highlights around the side and a small off-white head. Aroma starts off a little musty and off, but eventually the malts emerge- smoky, peaty, chocolaty, caramel- along with some earth, sugar, and wood. Flavor demonstrates a ton of malt character, too, with caramel, smoke, chocolate, peat, toast, earth, leaves, and spices. Medium-bodied, with a lightly smoky, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. No trace of the 10% ABV can be found. Nice malty sipper.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is that of peat smoke, dark fruit and some toffee. The flavor is more complex than the aroma. I get a lot of peat smoke, cherries, grapes, plums, toffee and some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A nicely balanced wee heavy where the alcohol is present, but not overpowering. Very drinkable.
