Inspired by the traditional Scotch Ales, has a deep, intense flavor from its dark roasted malts. The addition of peat smoked malt adds a unique flavor of the Highlands to this complex brew.

Black with thick tan head and good lacing. Aroma is like a robust stout, but with a bit of smokiness. Flavor is very burnt with tons of bitterness; not enough smoke. Good mouthfeel. Lingering bitterness is a tad strong. Not a bad imperial stout but not what I expect from a Scotch Ale.

Bottle, thanks sevenhokie! Caramel and roasted malt aroma with just a hint of peaty smoke. Pours dark coke colored tinged with a bit of ruby. Started off with one finger of light brown head that mostly dissipated, but thin layer is still hanging around and good lacing. Starts with sweet caramel and roasted malts to start. Finishes smooth with a strong peaty smoke that sticks on the palate for quite a while. Solid wee heavy, but I thought it a little too smoky for my tastes.

Rated on 4-17-2011 (Bottle) The appearance is a medium sized semi-fizzy tan head that mostly diminishes, reddish brown transparent body, very little carbonation observed, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, lightly smokey and lightly fruity. The taste is dark fruits, caramel malt, lightly smokey, and some alcohol. The mouthfeel is lightly tingly and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this beer is easy to drink at 10%ABV and a sipping beer. It has a very good flavor, worth trying and a beer I would drink again.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/25/2012. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, brown bread, light smoke, light chocolate, herbal, and toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, light smoke, herbal, and toasted/yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, chocolate, brown bread, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy and moderately slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Scotch ale style! All around great balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Starts off with the classic Sam Adams two-finger head with some staying power. Leaves streaky lace on the glass. The color is deep ruby brown and appears to be clear. Mild smell of chocolate ice cream. None of the typical elements of a Wee Heavy is present. Some cocoa, that’s it. The flavor is much improved. Good chocolate notes with a heavy alcohol influence. There’s some bitterness that is likely from hop rather than black patent malt as there is no coffee flavors. The alcohol is very present, perhaps on the high side. Rich bodied but not quite syrupy.

Pours a nearly opaque ruby-cola color with a dark tan-taupe head. Nice looking beer. Chocolate syrup, whiskey, and banana on the nose. Moderately thick, somewhat creamy mouthfeel with some fine, slightly burning scrubbing. Caramel, freezer burned ice cream, zinc, and whiskey flavors.

Aroma is Malts - caramel, slight coffee and roasty. Pours dark brown with frothy head, mostly diminishing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter and long. Very Good.

Bottle - small foamy head, black color, sweet roasty malt aroma and flavor, mild peat-like notes I guess, not my usually cup of tea but not bad for what it is ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

One of the better examples of the wee heavy that I’ve had. A little acidic, but overall, a nicely balanced ale.
