TheGrandMaster (1848), Auckland, New Zealand Nov 8, 2009 Bottle (in NZ), courtesy of yalnikim. Pours a viscous jet black with a bubbly brown head. On the nose, roasted malt and molasses with hints of stewed fruits. As you’d expect, plenty of alcohol on the palate, dominating somewhat the roasted malt. Touch of soy sauce and licorice to go with the dark chocolate flavour, some spice in the finish. Not sure what it is, but something about this just makes me say it is only OK, but I did enjoy it more through the glass. WLG423 (43), Connecticut, USA Nov 8, 2009 Pours out a dark brown but a little thinly for an imperial stout, zero head. Strong roasty aroma with toasty caramel notes. Body is a little thin but with a nice flavor. Tons of malt with a little boozy finish. A little light for an imperial stout, but a great beer for Sam Adams jdskinns (17), South Roxana, Illinois, USA Nov 4, 2009 Bottle. Poured an average head, brown in color, that slowly dissipates leaving a thin covering. Excellent lacing. Black body with no light getting through. Smell is sweet with coffee and vanilla coming through. Flavor is slightly bitter with roasted malt flavors dominating and some dark fruit flavors showing through. Medium body. Overall a pretty decent brew. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Nov 3, 2009 12oz Bottle – 99 Bottles – Federal Way, WA

tennessejed420 (69), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 2, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Aroma of dark chocolate and licorice. Jet black body with light brown head. Taste of chocolate, coffee on the finish. Pretty nice. gorditoabd (162), San Diego, California, USA Oct 31, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours black with fast-fading brown head. Aroma is of weak coffee, cocoa, and maybe some black licorice? Flavor is just okay. Some soy sauce sneaks into the coffee and then pervades for the remainder of the palate. Overall, the body of this beer is thin, with a disappointingly watery mouthfeel. The coffee just doesn’t hang around long enough and the alcohol, though not obnoxious, is present enough to make this overall less than really pleasant. I’d not go back for too much more of this. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 31, 2009 Bottle. Pours black with a one finger brown head. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa and had notes of molasses. Flavor was moderately sweet with dark chocolate, molasses, roasted malts, coffee and finishes dry and roasted matthewjk (47), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 29, 2009 It smells like an imperial stout, it looks like an imperial stout, but doesn’t taste like a top-notch imperial. samuel’s imperial stout is not offensive, but it doesn’t hide the alcohol sting that a premium imperial should. In general, Samuel Adams’ reputation is waning these days with the inability to keep producing new and innovative craft beers that taste better than their ever-increasing craft market competiton. This particular beer is an example of trying to rush out a product to compete against a popular style of beer. Samuel Adams is playing catch up and they are not executing like I feel they used to--even a decade or so ago. Perhaps a bit of a rant, but needed to express my feelings why I pass up Samuel Adams--most of the time--for beer that is better in the same price range. Great Lakes comes to mind.
