| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Oct 31, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours black with fast-fading brown head. Aroma is of weak coffee, cocoa, and maybe some black licorice? Flavor is just okay. Some soy sauce sneaks into the coffee and then pervades for the remainder of the palate. Overall, the body of this beer is thin, with a disappointingly watery mouthfeel. The coffee just doesn’t hang around long enough and the alcohol, though not obnoxious, is present enough to make this overall less than really pleasant. I’d not go back for too much more of this. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Oct 29, 2009 It smells like an imperial stout, it looks like an imperial stout, but doesn’t taste like a top-notch imperial. samuel’s imperial stout is not offensive, but it doesn’t hide the alcohol sting that a premium imperial should. In general, Samuel Adams’ reputation is waning these days with the inability to keep producing new and innovative craft beers that taste better than their ever-increasing craft market competiton. This particular beer is an example of trying to rush out a product to compete against a popular style of beer. Samuel Adams is playing catch up and they are not executing like I feel they used to--even a decade or so ago. Perhaps a bit of a rant, but needed to express my feelings why I pass up Samuel Adams--most of the time--for beer that is better in the same price range. Great Lakes comes to mind. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 29, 2009 Decent sized dark brown head of fine bubbles. Rich, sweet and malty aroma with lots of dark chocolate, dark ripe fruit, sweet cream and some roasted malts. Color is a very dark crimson black. Lots of roasted grains, bitter chocolate, a hint of coffee and some anise. Moderate bitterness. Finishes a tad dry, sweet and strong roastyness. An ok impy. jyen (1), USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 27, 2009 Deep dark brown. Not the best stout I’ve had, but certainly good. Chocolate, espresso and cream flavor. Aroma fits the taste. It’s not that sweet and not even that bitter - that probably means that it doesn’t stand out. Well-balanced but it isn’t stand-out. High in alcohol content. wilderthanyou (423), Guelph, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 27, 2009 Very standard. But in a good way i guess. Aroma of espresso, cream, anise, and cigar. Flavour is exactly the same as the aroma, but sadly ends on metallic note, which really kind of kills the experience for me. Unsweetened chocolate in the finish.
A pretty standard imperial stout, would probably buy again if I saw it around.
