Commercial Description:
This rich and malty ale originated in Ireland in 1710. It has a deep red color and distinctive caramel flavor from its Pale and Caramel malts. The malt sweetness is balanced by the earthy notes of East Kent Goldings hops. Cheers!

12oz bottle purchased from Clarendon Wines in Boston - with a thought to Sam Adams’ recent hop giveaway. Consumed in Feb 08 with a July 08 best before date. Pours a rich copper with lots of carbonation. Aroma is all malt with a bit of spice. The taste follows similarly, with a bit of rounded fruitiness in the aftertaste.

Pours red, slightly tan, with a moderate white head. Aroma is fruity-ish, caramel, bread and rather flowery. Tastes like liquid bread, caramel, gingerbread, slight floral flavor. Toasty finish and slightly cloying oktoberfest aftertaste. Light bodied, drinkable, but there’s some weird flavors here and there.

12 oz bottle from enniskillen; Nose of caramel and toffee; lightly hazy red with a big rust tinged, glass-lacing, head; flavor is slightly sweet and toffee; would be a good session brew for me with more flavor than lighter styles.

Nice light reddish color with a finger of off white head that laces the glass. Not much in the nose, some metallic caramel. Taste is much better, cool breadiness and sweet caramel that flows into a substantial hoppiness. Enjoyable and very drinkable if a bit simple.

Appearance is a red brown. I’ve seen prettier red beers before but this one’s pretty nice. Big and foamy rootbeer-like head with tons of lacing. Smell of brown sugar, raisin, walnut, and flowery hops. Taste is quite sour and bitter in a good way that balances the powerful sweetness in this beer. Flavor dances around a bit. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth with low carbonation. Finish is bitter and a bit astringent. Drinkability is decent. This is a pretty big beer for the low price tag.
