Tasting Notes:

Kosmic Mother Funk Grand Cru is tart, funky, and complex with notes of dark fruits, cherry, cocoa & vanilla. The addition of a small amount of Belgian candi sugar adds a bit of smoothness and hint of sweetness to this beer.

Notes from the Brewers:

ēThis one-of-a-kind Belgian ale is fermented with multiple microorganisms including Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus and other wild critters found in the environment of our 150-year old Boston brewery.
ēThe unique yeasts impart layers of spicy, fruity, & bright tart notes to the beer. Aged in our Hungarian oak tuns, the porous character of the wood allows air to slowly seep in during aging creating micro-oxidation that smoothes any harsh flavors.
ēGrand Cru often denotes a vintage of the highest quality or Ďthe best of the bestí. This release has been aging in our Barrel Room for just over a year.
ēKosmic Mother Funk is the soul of our Barrel Room Collection, blended to varying degrees in each of our five Belgian brews creating a distinct & complex character.

Looks black in color to me despite other ratings saying otherwise. Tiny ring of off white head. Draft pour at Thirsty Pig in Portland Maine. Weird aroma. Canít describe it. Funky? Taste is fig, plum, earth, licorice and a little sweet. I donít get it. Didnít like it nearly as much as everyone else seems to

Draft at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, $4 for a 6 oz. pour. Not bad, actually - I thought it was going to be $6. Anyway, it pours a hazy flat cola color with some carbonation bubbles on the sides of the glass but no head. Mix of sweet and sour notes, with brown sugar, oak, plum, balsamic vinegar, vanilla, cola, and black cherries. Medium-bodied, with low carboanation and a sweet and sour mouthfeel. Not bad but certainly not worthy of the hype this receives when it comes through town.

Draft at Moriartys. Clear dark mahogany brown with a soapy off-white foam that quickly dissipated. Dark sweet and sour fruits. Black currants. Blackberries. Black cherries. Clean barrel notes. No smoke. Balsamic vinegar. Medium-light body. Felt watery at first but thickened as it warmed. Nice palate but not overly complex for a wild ale.

On Draught
Pours a mahogany color with a small but well retained head.

The atom aid wood and grape right up front. Itís got some nice funkiness and a little bit of balsamic vinegar thing happening. Itís got some fruity pear character and some lightly toasty malt as well.

The flavor is woody and lightly sweet, itís tart with some sour cherry flavor a bit of roasty malt and a surprisingly well controlled acetic character. Itís sour for sure, but itís also rich... it hits the flavor points of a Flemish Red very well.

On tap at Scion in Silver Spring, MD. Opaque, ruby-brown with a thin tan head and sparse lacing. Aroma of raspberries, cherries, tart dark fruit, grapes and balsamic vinegar. Taste of tart red grapes, tart dark fruit, raspberries, sour cherries and balsamic vinegar. Definitely sour, but not overwhelming and with enough sweetness to take the edge off. Medium body and medium carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
