COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Ahtanum IPA is brewed with only Ahtanum hops, a newer variety from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Ahtanum hops contribute a balanced and typically "American" orange peel, piney and floral flavor and aroma to this brew, balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the five different malts.

This one has a nice a stinging bitter orange rind flavor. Thin compared to the last two I tried. Not much aroma only a faint stink. Too watery. Boring.

A - Pours a a clear rusty copper with a 1 finger off-white head. S - Grapefruit citrus, caramel malt, some berry fruit, along with some floral aromas. T - Follows the nose, grapefruit oil, sweet malt, floral notes, some light berry fruit, citrus bitterness dries the mouth and clings to the back of the tongue and finishes bittersweet. Citrus hops hang on the tongue for awhile. M - Moderate carbonation, slick, medium bodied. The hops are citrus driven and provide good flavor and with a dry bitterness. A nice clean hope profile. Bright clear amber beer, small white head. Light semi dry palate, smooth. A little creamy malt. Sweetish hops. Floral orange - tangerine, trace of peach. Becomes more bitter towards the semi dry finish. Decent single hop IPA. Tasty and refreshing.

It would be very easy to find a better over-hopped Pale in many a micro-brew. Still, Sam’s variation on Latitude is pretty, pleasant, and goes down easy. As stated by others, the orange peel is a little more prominent here, but not so much so as to detract from enjoyment.

The beer is clear and copper to orange in color. The head is off white, and measures just shy of a half inch. The aroma is earthy and malt, first and foremost, followed by some pine and resin and a light floral presence. As I have stated in my previous reviews of the Latitude 48 Deconstructed Series, the malt profile is too bold and overshadows the hop character. Not bad, but unexciting. This is a beer to be thrown back with spicy wings or bar food, not one to be sniffed and/or savored. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation. Lingering flavors of malt and pine. Overall, mediocre. Last of the "Deconstructed" 12 pack I got last summer and let sit in my fridge since then, thinking I mioght conduct some grand tasting of all 6 at a time. Instead, I just done two at a time, and as the odd bottle out, I’m comparing it to the full L48° bottle. Poured into a shaker, it hits a big head over the same pleasant amber body as the others. Head dwindles to rocky foam. Still a slight orange citrus smell to it, while the hop nose on the full Lat.48° is almost gone. Taste on the Ahtanum has more of an orange zest note, overlaid with dried hops. Another interesting American varietal at work, that I’ll try to find a fresher single-hop version. Still a pretty good and distinctive hoppy beer.

Bottle from BevMo: Poured a dark amber hue that had a tiny layer of film head which eventually broke down to some patches a ring shaped O. In the nose, a bold aroma of floral hops that smells fruity and sweet. Flavors were succulent with a sweet yet bitter taste of honey, orange peel, dried tangerine, pollen from flowers, and a faint background of pine.
