Samuel Adams® Latitude 48 IPA is a unique IPA brewed with a select blend of hops from top German, English, and American growing regions all located close to the 48th latitude within the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere. The combination of hops in this beer creates a distinctive but not overpowering hop character. The beer is dry hopped with Ahtanum, Simcoe®*, and East Kent Goldings hops for a powerful citrus and earthy aroma. The hop character is balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the malt blend.

Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in an English pint glass. The beer pours a medium amber color, with a moderate just off-white head. The nose shows English crystal malt and earthy/herbal hop notes. German and English varietals of the latter seem to come through far more perceptibly than any U.S. species. Pleasing, but seemingly lacking some oomph for the style. The palate shows a mild but noticeable malt sweetness up front, followed by a quite strong note of fresh hop flavor in the mid-palate to finish. The latter is a note unlike any I’ve experienced in an IPA, and is quite nice; akin to the aromas volatized from the addition of hops to the brew kettle. Again, the flavors are pleasing, but lack the bitterness and hop punch found in excellent versions of the style. Mouthfeel and carbonation are both nicely dialed in. The finish seems almost balanced, with lingering notes of both hop bitterness/flavor and a slight residual sweetness. The general is of a recipe styled after U.S. east coast and/or English versions of the style. Overall, an interesting concept and a pleasing beer, if not quite up to the task of being a truly aggressive IPA.

Aroma of sweetish malt, caramel, pine, fruits, earthy hops. Flavour is moderate sweet with a medium bitter finish. Good if unsensational piney IPA.

Old rating. Generic IPA. More earthy and perfumey. Nothing offensive not exceptional.

Pours dark golden with a creamy off white head. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits, and pine. Flavor is a crystal malt start with grapefruit, some sweet tropical fruit in the middle and a grapefruit and pine hop finish. This is the best IPA attempt from Sam Adams.

Klares bernsteinfarbenes Bier mit einer ordentlichen leicht beigen Schaummkrone. Geruch fruchtig hopfg, Citrus, leicht harzig. Geschmack kräftig malzig, zitronig hopfig fruchtige Aromen, dezent bitter, gut trinkbar!

Pleasant but over-perfumed brew that fails to garner a whole lot of interest. Not bad quality by any standards, just somewhat one-dimensional.

12oz courtesy of hawanna @Biervana post-BKL mini-tasting , danke. Classical East Coast APA/IPA crossover with pleasantly earthy EU and UK leanings: biscuit malt base, organge marmelade, some of that Lady Gray surfacing in between the more pronounced pine and grapefruit zest. Caramel malts provide more sweetness than texture, sessionable.

Dark orange. almost no head. Aroma is dense, crispy and malt-forward. There’s a nice mouthfeel to this one, crisp light, almost refreshing. european aroma with some mulch, graham cracker, ginger, honey.

Poured from a bottle into a glass. The beer is an attractive orange color with a single finger of creamy head that leaves a bit of lacing on the glass. It smells of pineapple, grass and brown sugar. A very pleasant nose. The taste is a bit sweet with a touch of apricot at first and then becomes more bitter and dry with the Euro hops shining through. Has an almost pilsner quality to it but a good pilsner. It’s as if an American craft brewery had a baby with a good German beer if that makes any sense. It’s medium bodied, a bit sticky with lively carbonation and finishes dry. This beer doesn’t exactly wow me for an IPA but there isn’t anything off about it either. I would definitely have this again. All in all a good beer.
