Samuel Adams® Latitude 48 IPA is a unique IPA brewed with a select blend of hops from top German, English, and American growing regions all located close to the 48th latitude within the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere. The combination of hops in this beer creates a distinctive but not overpowering hop character. The beer is dry hopped with Ahtanum, Simcoe®*, and East Kent Goldings hops for a powerful citrus and earthy aroma. The hop character is balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the malt blend.

Pours a clear, red-amber with an off-white, 1/2 inch head that subsides into lace. The aroma is restrained but floral and with a touch of sweetness. Latitude 48 (a cool concept, too, I have to admit) is a medium-bodied brew of moderate bitterness (that manifests to my palate as grapefruit) and with a balancing touch of caramel. As it warms (my beginning temperature was 45 degrees F) one can perceive the fresh yeast. The finish is pleasingly but not overwhelmingly bitter. The liquor is floral and with a reserved character, more like a British IPA than an American IPA or an APA. I agree with the overall rating for the beer, but find it humorous that it receives only a 50 in style points (probably because some think an IPA must knock you into tomorrow with hop bitterness). It need not, and the hops used in this beverage is subtle and floral. A well-priced beer that might strike those expecting a hop wallop to be a pale ale. Well-made beer however you slice it.

(5) Average at best. Low hoppy. Not so interesting. Low ball. Too commercial. You know what I mean - where is the soul Samuel?!

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Maker: Boston Beer Company, Boston/Mass., United States *** Beer: Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA (bottled, 330ml) *** Style: India Pale Ale (IPA) *** ALC.VOL.: 6.0% *** "Brewed with a select blend of hops from top German, English, and American growing regions all located close to the 48th latitude within the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere. The combination of hops in this beer creates a distinctive but not overpowering hop character." [brewery notes] *** Colour: Deep, slightly hazy amber with a medium, creamy off-white head. *** Nose: Caramel(!), herbs, pine, whiff of citrus. *** Texture: Medium- to full-bodied, not watery at all. Modest carbonation. *** Taste: Herbal and pinewood notes are dominant at the start, together with some unspecified citrus notes and chewy malts. Spicy, too. Medium is a bit resinous, with citric, pine and herbal essences rivaling for dominance. Finish is malty, only modestly bitter - in contrast to the after taste, which emphasizes pinewood. *** Impressions: Very good IPA/APA with a nice balance of hoppy and malty notes. Not a hop monster to be sure! But the malts add flavour and depth, and the herbal notes are interesting. Not *that* much different from their "Rebel IPA".
