4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with two inches of tan head. Smells of sour hops, citrus, sweat, and flowers. OOOH. Tastes floral, light dark fruits, light chocolates, some smoke. Raspberry? Holy shit. I didn’t expect this. Please keep this around, I’d buy it on a regular basis.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
6/01/2011: Samuel Adams Category 23 LongShot Blackened Hops... Aroma: Notes of roasted malts topped with a ton of mouth-watering pine and sugary grapefruit hops. Appearance: Pours out in a really dark brown (more or less black) strand with a two and a half finger head of lasting, dense, frothy, beige-colored foam; fine, detailed lacing. Flavor: Roasted malts and hints of coffee; there is just a mild sweetness that is quickly rolled over by a decent amount of pine, resign, and citrus hops; a bit of molasses in the finish with some dry roastiness; slightly orangey and milk chocolate as well. Palate: Medium to medium-full body with a smooth texture, although it seems a bit watery here and there. Overall: Another winner (obviously) from Rodney; this beer is easy to drink, flavorful, and packs a nice punch; it is maybe TOO balanced as I would have like a bit more hops and bitterness coming through, but it’s still darn tasty; this is the first Black IPA for the masses that pulls it off delightfully...
12 fl. oz. bottle (7.0% ALC./VOL.; Enjoy Before SEP 2011) from Rempke Bigg’s in Harrison, Ohio. Rating #233 for this beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
A - Pours almost black with 2 fingers of frothy head that’s kind of a khaki color. Takes a good while to settle down. Leaves solid sheets of lacing behind.
S - Dank pine, some pungent grapefruit citrus, some alcohol. Has a strange aroma as it warms that I can’t quite pick out.
T - Piney hops, charred woody malt, hints of bitter dark chocolate. Pine seems to be the dominate hop throughout. The malt seems slighlty sweet at first but quickly dries out. Finishes with solid pine bitterness.
M - Adequate carbonation, creamy, medium body. Quite nice.
Good roasted malt backbone blends very well with the pine. Good all-around components bring this together nicely. Well done.

Opaque black - brown beer, good pale tan head. Semi soft and airy palate. Semi dry. Even dark malt with whispers of roast and coffee. Mild lactose cream. Fresh piney hops with a trace of orange. Finishes fresh and slightly minerally. Very well joined up and tasty black IPA.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
[Reviewed on: 06-08-2011]
Near black in color and near opaque with mahogany edges if held to the light. A creamy tan head has very good retention. Even with hops in the name, I was surprised by the strong hop aroma in this black beer. Citrus and pine hops dominate with a nearly hidden roasted malt aroma in the background. Crisp with medium body. Slightly dry finish.
T- Moderately bitter; less so than might be expected given the hoppy aroma. Muted roasted malt flavor. Great hoppy finish.
O- Full West coast hop flavor in a very drinkable brew. 7% ABV largely hidden. Blackened Hops is the best of the three 2011 Sam Adams Longshot releases I’ve tried.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Near black with a light brown head. The aroma iis great-- lots of dark malts, molasses, chocolate, with citrus floral hop notes. In the nose, this is all about the malts so far. On the palate, there is a more balanced marriage between malt and hops, although the sweet dark malts remain assertive. Not a hop bomb by any stretch, but there is enough here to make a very solid contribution to the palate. I love malty complexity, so this scores top marks from me. If I could get more of this I would. My favourite black IPA in a while.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Originally reviewed: 4/30/11. Glad to see this year’s Longshot release much more available around here. I really had to hunt for last year’s. This is the first one of the lot. Poured into a pint glass.
Pours a deep heavy black with a small beige head on top. Light lace. Big piney nose. Lots of fresh pine needles, trail, citrus notes, and just a faint hint of roast on the back end. The mouth is firm. Moderate depth, enhances the style well. Big juicy hops right at the forefront, but as I sip, this mellows to a mild bitter twang. The ’dark’ aspects come forward a bit more as this beer warms. Faint coffee tones. All in all though, this is a pleasant dark bitter beer. This style is always a treat to try. A good beer here.
