Bottle. Deep copper with medium sized off white sudsy head. Nose is ho-hum malt, brown sugar, oatmeal, orange peel, lemon, grapefruit. Flavor big, boozy, burt sugar, roast. Big bitter finish. Would be much better at 5.3%

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle via sixpack from Spirits Crossroads. Poured a good looking clear dark burgundy body with an average sized foamy off white head and lots of rising effervescence. Aroma starts off syrupy sweet with nutty undertones berry skins, cough medicine and wet bread. Flavor is dry with slight sherry notes, alcohol, old stale toffee and bad berries. Super dry palate with a fuller mouthfeel and average to stronger carbonation. Meh not that good except for someone looking to catch a buzz off the monster 9.3% ABV.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear bright brown with good sticky light tan head. Aroma just gets better and better as it warms. Nice sweet big malty caramel, dark fruits. Smells "purple". Kinda like a dopplebock. Flavor didn’t do it for me as much. Sweet almost syrupy upfront, but then turns to an orangepeel and earthy bitterness. Also has a bit of a boozy character. I do like this beer, but it smells better than it tastes to me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Ruby red, brownish, off white head, and clear. The smell is big sweet maltyiness, some fruit, vanilla, maple, nuts. The taste is a sweet, almond, amaretto, cherry, and decent despite the big sweetness.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
I thought this was pretty good. I found it necessary to keep reminding myself, "this is an alt, this is an alt". On that level, it’s very good--compared to most alts, which usually bore to tears with a simple bread/caramel malt thing. The alcohol is big here, but that is reasonably well restrained. What was weird about it, as I alluded to already, is that with its dark brown body, moderately vibrant carbonation, and rich malty notes, my brain told me that the beer in my glass is a Belgian dubbel. But if you think that way, it will disappoint, because the fruitiness is too subtle, the sweetness isn’t anything like a candi sugar sweetness, and it lacks some of the depth in the malts. It’s a big German alt, and on its own terms it’s quite good. Bottle.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours deep clear mahogany with a large soapy tan head. The aroma has dark berries, toffee, heavily toasted malt, anise and it is overall very full and rich. Medium / full lush body with quite a bit of carbonation. The flavor starts out with the aroma traits along with lots of sharp fruitiness and alcohol burn. The finish is on the astringent side. There is a raisin aspect as it warms. Okay alt, but I prefer the lower alcohol alts.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
GABF 2011. Dark clear rosy brownish ruby. Small but lasting head. Great aroma of sweet cherries paired with toasty toffee malt, and a touch of candy sugar. Flavor is nice and big with some cherry and other darker fruity tones, candy sugar and deep roasty toffee tones, slightly burnt, in a good way. Pretty swell!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
From bottle. Mild sweet nutty aroma, light winey acidic tang. Caramel and molasses, alcohol. Reminiscent of a dubbel. Dark coppery brown clear with light tan foamy lacing head. Medium heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Starts sweet with molasses, alcohol, plum, and rich malt. Clean finish with sweet tang, topped off with a mild bitterness. Sweet nutty after, kinda like Doppelsticke.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is fruit, a mild nuttiness, some sweetness and a strong hint of alcohol. The flavor is heavy malts, ESB-like fruitiness, and a warming alcohol finish. With the alcohol, I was expecting an ASA due to the normal ABV of this style, but it was an almost non-factor, this was a good altbier on its own.
