Created by Samuel Adams employee Fred Hessler.
Fred wanted to go big or go home with his homebrew and decided to brew a kicked up Sticke Alt. This full-bodied ale has a big, malty character balanced by subtle orange and grapefruit notes from the hops. With a light amber color, this brew has a sweet finish.

12 oz bottle via sixpack from Spirits Crossroads. Poured a good looking clear dark burgundy body with an average sized foamy off white head and lots of rising effervescence. Aroma starts off syrupy sweet with nutty undertones berry skins, cough medicine and wet bread. Flavor is dry with slight sherry notes, alcohol, old stale toffee and bad berries. Super dry palate with a fuller mouthfeel and average to stronger carbonation. Meh not that good except for someone looking to catch a buzz off the monster 9.3% ABV.

12 ounce bottle poured an amber redish color, with aromas of malt, over riped fruit, light citrus, and some caramel. Flavors are the same, heavy malt flavor overall, did not taste like a 9.3% beer that is for sure.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark amber with a nice tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, and chocolate. Taste is caramel, molasses, dark fruit, toffee, and alcohol. A bit sweet for me. Decent.

Big Top Beverage Mart... variety case: Pours a reddish brown with a tan head. Aroma is Eastern European marinated fruits... kind of doppelbockish. Body is ridiculously heavy. Taste is rather sweet. Finish is slightly hoppy and bitter. Lots of fruitiness. This is a hard one to drink. I wish I only had one these rather than 8. Not my thing.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, light dark ripe fruit, light caramel, and some brown sugar. Poured deep amber/brown/deep orange in color with a small, creamy, dense, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor is medium sweet, but also just off. Tastes of malt, light caramel, vegetables, and garbage. Medium body. Slick, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, vegetable, garbage finish is medium sweet, lightly bitter, and dry. 9.3%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Bottle. Ruby red, brownish, off white head, and clear. The smell is big sweet maltyiness, some fruit, vanilla, maple, nuts. The taste is a sweet, almond, amaretto, cherry, and decent despite the big sweetness.

Strong, malty aroma has a firm and somewhat sugary overtone of horehound and molasses. It pours a clear, dark, bubbly cola brown with a very thick, fine-bubbled, pale tan head that leaves some good lacing. Flavor has a malty core and strong notes of brown sugar and horehound, heavy on the sweetness - maybe a tad or two too heavy. The undertone of hop bitterness and the alcohol nip do not quite balance the sweetness. Subtle citrus hints come through as well. Texture has decent body and fizz, and is a bit sticky. Good one, but next time maybe ease up on the sugar?

deep reddish brown, but very clear. minimal head. smells of roasted malt and caramel. strong alcohol impact to the tastebuds. there’s some good flavor there, but there’s also a cough syrup flavor that i can’t get past. if it were less boozy, i’d definitely like it better.

Part of the Longshot 2012 six-pack - $9.99 at Total Wine & More in Atlanta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a clear, very dark amber-red body with a tallish, foamy, off-white head. A little smear here and there of lace.

Smell: Lightly sweetish, spicy, boozy nose with notes of dates and figs and citrus peel tossed into cooking brown sugar and grain spirits.

Taste: Bread crusts, brown sugar, and a little layer of molasses. Moderately sweet in a syrupy way. Slight grapefruit with a bite of chewing gum. Spicy hops but there’re also some pops of clove buds. Medium-light bitterness. Ends with a kick of hot alcohol on the drying, malty finish. Singe of alcohol even well beyond the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: The secret in the Secret Alt is not the conspicuous alcohol presence, it’s how this thing made it into the Longshot pack.
