Commercial Description:
While there is a great malty foundation to this brew, Mike’s Double IPA showcases his appreciate for hops. In fact, he included seven different varieties of American hops, totaling over six pounds of hops per barrel. The hops add an intense floral and citrus aroma to this brew.

Bottle. Pours hazy and cloudy orange with an average, frothy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (grain, cereal, meal), heavy hops (flowers, perfume, citrus, pine), average yeast (sweat) with notes of peach, pear, and alcohol. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Certainly had hops. A nice copper color with a white head that hung around. Aroma had big pine notes and a noticeable citrus quality, some caramel malts. Flavor was good but seemed to be all hops needed a little more malty sweetness to it but otherwise it was decent. Finish was crisp and the body was full.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small off white head. Aroma is heavy with citrus hop with just a whisper of the 9% alcohol content. Palate is heavy on the mouth with a just right amount of carbonation. The flavor is dominated by the citrus hops, grapefruit being the dominate taste. There is also a nice malt backbone to give the beer balance. Quite enjoyable.

I think that this is a really nice gateway IIPA for those just starting out. While it’s hoppy, it just seems like it’s lost somehow and unrefined. It’s at odds with the lack of malt to support the hops, so instead of being a great IIPA, it winds up being barely passable. It pours out a deep orange/amber color, 1/2 inch white head with nice carbonation. Aroma is piney hops, grapefruit and a touch aspriny. Flavor has the biting pine hops which just seemed so ragged. No malt profile to keep it in harmony with the beer. Reminded me of a hop tea. A lingering bitter finish. Just okay.

Pours a nice hazy orange with a white head, good lacing, decent amount of carbonation. Aroma has lots of piney hops, grapefruit, malt, taste is initially bitter, good amount of malts to balance the hops. Well balanced double. Very nice surprise from Sam Adams!

12oz bottle–pours a rich light tan head and amber/copper color. Aroma is floral/herbal hops (cascade, Willamette, centennial?), secondary medium malt, then some pine, chemical. Taste is chemical/metallic/resiny hops with some bitter, secondary medium malt, syrupy mouth feel. This beer varies as I progress on both aroma and taste. And some sugary butterscotch (diacytl?). not crazy about. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing. 091025rerate-12oz bottle-pours an off white head and cloudy copper color. Aroma is orange/lemon-citrus/pine hops, secondary medium malt. Taste is orange/lemon-citrus/pine/floral hops, secondary medium malt-caramel, some tannins. Thanks stevo for sharing. 3.6

Bottle pours a hazy orange amber body with a tall offwhite head. Aroma is grassy and grapefruity hops with some toasted caramel. Medium body is thick and creamy. Taste has a citrusy grapefruit character, with some chewy caramel and grassy hop bitterness. A very well balanced DIPA that is dangerously drinkable.

Bottle from LS pack. Very hoppy aroma was wonderful; floral and grassy. Poured clear copper color. No malts were present with overwhelming HOP flavor. Little too hoppy for my taste but fit the style. Hops left some souring aftertaste on the palate. Hops lingered in my teeth minutes later. A sipping brew for me that lasts a while. This beer was a good experiance and I’m glad S.A. does the competition. Glad to taste and support brews from fellow homebrewers.
