COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Joe Formanek.
For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward brew has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a solid non transparent black color, low carbonation, light brown colored white around the glass for a head, some lacing. Aroma of molasses, darkened malt, alcohol, and dark chocolate, and Sanka- uhh... Hits the mouth with wide body, malt tastes like it had some dark chocolate added to it- and just left there to die, middle has some bitterness which develops a silk feel with some warming on the finish. Slightly above average impy stout.

Pours as jet black and with as dark brown a head as any beer I’ve ever seen. Nose is rich black patent and choc malts, big hops, cacao, char, and some definite vegetal and peppery notes. I can’t say I’ve ever smelled this profile before. Tastes rich, very choc and patent malty, with backup hops, roasty charred malt, and late bitterness. This one is a bit rough around the edges, as the flavors seem very odd, and get odder late.

Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma of dark roast and dark chocolate, flavor is much the same with a very subtle hint of smoke with a dark roasted bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel with low-medium carbonation. Overall, a pretty basic, run of the mill imperial stout.

Pours black with a foamy brown head. There is a strong roasted aroma with a hint of chocolate. The body is smooth and dry with a little hoppy bitterness in the middle and a slightly sweet finish.

Oil black with 2" of beautiful cocoa brown head. Aroma and taste are both "roasty with chocolate notes", and there’s a mildly cloying treacle sourness with faint sprucey hops into the finish, along with some alcohol. Relatively thick mouthfeel is about right for drinkability in the style.

It’s a good imperial stout. Has a burnt chocolate taste with a bit of coffee. Silky like milk.

Pours inky black with a large pillowy mocha head that leaves webs of lacing - really looks beautiful. Aroma is peaty, iodine, light chocolate, and coffee roasts. Taste is much the same - weird smokey peat and iodine taste. Not agreeing with me that well.

Bottle from Casa De Oro. Dark in color. Nose is roasted matiness with a hint of sweetness. Roasted maltiness seems to dominate. Some milky sweetness. A little hop kick in the finish. Alcohol is also a little noticeable. Decent impy.

12oz bottle poured into a Snifter at 41°. Color is black with mellow carbonation and a very small tan head. Aroma of molasses and coffee. It has a bolder medium body with a smooth mouth feel. Flavor is deeply roasted with coffee and some caramel ending with a light bitterness. In the after taste the flavors turn to a paint like taste. Overall its not a very good Imperial Stout, flavors come out a bit odd.

Pours a totally opaque dark brown (almost black) with a thick, rich chocolate head. Nose is roasted grain and molasses. Taste is not totally stout-like, but is well balanced and delicious nevertheless. I get the normal stout chocolate and dark, rich coffee characteristics, but there’s also the tart, sweet malt, vinous and high ABV emblems you’d expect from a barleywine ale. This is great stuff!
